About San Domenico Festival

Every August, the San Domenico Festival brings the district of the same name in Ruviano to life—a small town in the province of Caserta overlooking the middle Volturno valley. Around the small church dedicated to the saint, local families and many emigrants returning for the occasion share three days of religious rites, a procession, fireworks, live music, and food stalls featuring local products. It is a small-scale festival, yet deeply intense in participation, where popular devotion blends with the joy of reuniting.

A district festival in the heart of the middle Volturno valley

The San Domenico Festival is celebrated every August in the district of the same name in Ruviano, a town in the province of Caserta, Campania, nestled along the middle Volturno river between the slopes of the Matese mountains and the hills of Caiazzo. This is not a large city event; it is a community festival in the most authentic sense of the word, made up of a few houses, a small church, and an entire village that, for three evenings, fills up again with voices, chairs set out in front of doorways, and music.

The district and its church

The San Domenico district is located about three and a half kilometers from the center of Ruviano, at just over one hundred meters above sea level. It is a tiny hamlet with very few permanent residents, yet it retains a surprisingly strong sense of belonging. At the center of it all is the small church dedicated to Saint Dominic, restored in 2018, which remains the focal point around which the community finds cohesion and identity. For those born here who later moved to the North or abroad, the patronal festival has always been the appointment that marks the return home.

The territory of Ruviano belongs to the Diocese of Alife-Caiazzo: the town's main parish, dedicated to Saint Leo the Great, celebrated in 2026 the seven-hundredth anniversary of its first documentary attestation, a testament to the deep religious roots of this corner of the Terra di Lavoro.

Three days of faith, music, and dancing under the stars

The festival's format repeats year after year, with a structure that alternates between liturgical moments and secular celebrations. The religious part opens the festivities, while the secular side accompanies them late into the night.

  • Triduum of preparation: recitation of the rosary and holy mass in the evenings preceding the festival;
  • Solemn Eucharistic celebration on the main day, followed in the evening by the procession through the streets of the district;
  • Fireworks display to close the most important day;
  • Musical evenings featuring karaoke contests, accordion music, ballroom dancing, and disco music;
  • Food stalls open every evening with typical local products.

The 2025 edition, the most documented

In 2025, the festival took place from Saturday, August 9th, to Monday, August 11th. The triduum to the saint, with rosary and holy mass, occupied the evenings of August 7th, 8th, and 9th. On Saturday the 9th, at 9:00 PM, the final of the karaoke contest was held, involving local singers. Sunday the 10th, the highlight day, saw the 11:00 AM Eucharistic celebration precede the 7:00 PM procession through the district's streets and the 8:00 PM mass with homily; at 9:00 PM, the fireworks display lit up the sky above the houses, while the accordion of Peppe Zona accompanied the ballroom dancing. On Monday the 11th, the final evening was entrusted to the "Power Mix," with DJs and vocalists from RDS, laser effects, and free gadgets for the public.

The work of the festival committee

Behind every edition is the voluntary work of the district's festival committee, which collects donations, sets up the stage, arranges the lights, and organizes the stalls. It is a commitment that is renewed with tenacity despite the small numbers of the district, and which explains why this festival continues to endure where many rural celebrations have long since faded. The success of the event depends almost entirely on the generosity of the residents and those originally from the district.

Ruviano and its surroundings

Those arriving for the festival can take the opportunity to discover an area little touched by mass tourism. Ruviano, with its hamlet of Alvignanello, is located just a few kilometers from Caiazzo and the Volturno river, in an area of olive groves, vineyards, and small villages. The town's summer calendar also includes the Peasant Culture Festival and Folklore Festival, an early August event dedicated to rural traditions and folk groups. Further north, the Matese lake and the trails of the regional park open up, while to the south, the Caserta plain leads toward the Royal Palace of Caserta and the San Leucio complex.

How to experience it at its best

The San Domenico Festival is not an event built for tourism: it is a village ritual where you are welcomed naturally, provided you approach it with respect. It is worth arriving in the evening, participating in the procession, stopping at the stalls to taste the dishes prepared by the families, and staying until the fireworks. Those looking for the slow and genuine rhythm of inland Campania, far from the most crowded routes, will find it here without filters.

San Domenico Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the San Domenico Festival in the district of Ruviano has not yet been officially announced. The festival is traditionally held in the heart of August, as confirmed by the 2024 and 2025 editions (August 9-11), featuring a religious triduum, procession, fireworks, and musical evenings. At the moment, neither the dates nor the program have been published; announcements usually come from the festival committee and the local Caserta press closer to the event.

2026 Edition: dates not yet announced

As of the writing of this entry, there are no official communications regarding the dates of the 2026 edition of the San Domenico Festival in the district of Ruviano (province of Caserta, Campania). The event was regularly documented in 2024 and 2025, when it took place from August 9th to 11th, and everything suggests it will be repeated this year during the same period.

As is always the case for district festivals, the calendar is defined by the festival committee in the weeks immediately preceding the event and spread through posters displayed in the village, word of mouth, and online newspapers in the Caserta area. Those wishing to attend would do well to check for updates in the first week of August.

What to expect

Based on previous editions, the festival is organized over three evenings: a triduum of preparation with rosary and holy mass, the solemn Eucharistic celebration and procession on the main day, the fireworks display, and musical evenings dedicated to dancing. Food stalls with local products remain open throughout the festivities. However, no artist names or specific times can be anticipated until the program is made public.
