About Salese Carnival

The Salese Carnival brings winter to life in the center of Sala Consilina, located in the Vallo di Diano, in the province of Salerno. Organized by the Arte e Mestieri cultural association with the support of the Municipality, the event features a parade of masks, costumed groups, and choreography along Via Mezzacapo and Piazza Umberto I, involving schools, associations, and families. Music, magic shows, puppet theater, workshops for children, and carnival street food round out a day of free festivities.

Carnival in the heart of the Vallo di Diano

Every winter, Sala Consilina, a town in the province of Salerno overlooking the Vallo di Diano in Campania, transforms into a large open-air stage for an entire day. The Salese Carnival is the most colorful festival of the year for the local community: a parade that winds through the town center and concludes in Piazza Umberto I, where music, costumes, and performances entertain the public from morning until late afternoon.

The event is organized by the Arte e Mestieri cultural association with the patronage of the Municipality of Sala Consilina and the collaboration of numerous local associations, sports clubs, and cooperatives. This collective effort gives the Salese Carnival its unique character: it is not an event imposed from above, but a celebration born from schools, dance academies, youth groups, and local volunteer organizations that spend weeks preparing costumes, floats, and choreography.

A parade that tells a story

The Salese Carnival is built around a theme that changes every year, guiding the costumes, decorations, and choreography. In 2026, the central theme was "Fairytales on Parade": beloved children's stories came to life along the route, accompanied by a street band and the routines of a majorette group.

The procession starts near the Church of Sant'Anna, travels along Via Mezzacapo, and culminates in Piazza Umberto I, which becomes the nerve center of the festivities. This is where the stage, performances, and areas dedicated to children are located. The well-established format features a full-day program: starting in the morning with the parade and continuing in the afternoon with entertainment, music, and awards for the participating groups.

Shows, workshops, and entertainment

The Salese Carnival program is designed for an intergenerational audience, with special attention given to children. Recurring ingredients of the event include:

  • Performances by local dance schools, bringing themed choreography to the square;
  • Magic shows and traditional puppet theater;
  • Aerial dance performances, adding a circus touch to the day;
  • Creative workshops and animated readings for the little ones;
  • Inflatable park and mascot entertainment in the park area;
  • Afternoon baby dance with a DJ;
  • Street food featuring typical carnival dishes and sweets.

In recent years, the parade has also hosted television-famous attractions, such as the Giant Dinosaurs seen on the show "Tu Sì que Vales," which were a huge hit with the younger audience.

A tradition that belongs to the town

The Salese Carnival is more than just a parade: it is a moment when the town recognizes itself. The nursery rhyme of the months, recited by children in costume, is one of the elements that links the event to the folk memory of the Vallo di Diano, where Carnival has always had a strong ritual and agricultural component. Alongside the masked groups, sports associations, hiking groups, social cooperatives, and third-sector organizations march: the festival thus becomes a showcase for the local community fabric.

Sala Consilina and the surrounding area

Sala Consilina is one of the main hubs of the Vallo di Diano, the vast plain that opens up between the Maddalena mountains and the Cilento massif, in the southern part of the province of Salerno. The town is built on two levels: the ancient village perched on the slope, with alleys, stairways, and historic churches, and the modern part stretching toward the plain. A few kilometers away lies the Certosa di San Lorenzo in Padula, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the territory serves as the natural gateway to the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park.

Why it is worth attending

The Salese Carnival is an authentic local festival, free and family-friendly, far from the touristy atmosphere of Italy's major carnivals. Attendees find a lively square, many children in costume, a program that unfolds at a relaxed pace throughout the day, and a community that puts on a show for itself. It is the best opportunity to discover Sala Consilina at its most vibrant and to get to know the Vallo di Diano outside of the summer season.

Salese Carnival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Salese Carnival, titled "Fairytales on Parade," took place in Sala Consilina on Sunday, February 22, following the postponement of the date initially scheduled for February 15 due to bad weather. From 10 a.m., the parade started from the Church of Sant'Anna along Via Mezzacapo to Piazza Umberto I, animated by street bands, majorettes, dance schools, magic shows, puppet theater, and the Giant Dinosaurs seen on "Tu Sì que Vales."

"Fairytales on Parade": the 2026 Salese Carnival

The theme chosen for 2026 by the Arte e Mestieri cultural association was "Fairytales on Parade": the most beloved children's stories guided the costumes, decorations, and choreography of the entire day. The event, initially scheduled for Sunday, February 15, was postponed to Sunday, February 22 due to bad weather that would have compromised several planned initiatives.

The event kicked off at 10:00 a.m. with the procession departing from the Church of Sant'Anna area and traveling along Via Mezzacapo to Piazza Umberto I. The parade was accompanied by a street band and the choreography of the majorettes, along with groups from local dance schools — including New Dance All Dance, LuDanSe, and SportZone — and aerial dance performances by Aerial Arts.

Twelve children in costume recited the traditional nursery rhyme of the months, bringing back an ancient practice of the Vallo di Diano Carnival to the square. Numerous local entities took part in the parade, from the Ragazzi di San Rocco to the GG Trail hiking group, as well as martial arts associations and local cooperatives.

The square in celebration

Once they reached Piazza Umberto I, the day continued with magic shows, puppet theater, entertainment for all ages, and the Giant Dinosaurs from Dinomania Italia, already television guests of "Tu Sì que Vales." An inflatable park with Disney mascots was set up in the park area, while the afternoon was marked by baby dance with DJ Pompeo. Along the route, street food stands offered typical Carnival dishes.

During the event, a minute of silence was observed in memory of little Domenico, a two-year-old boy who passed away at the Monaldi Hospital in Naples; immediately after, the sky of Piazza Umberto I was colored with fireworks, greeted by the applause of those present. The day concluded with the awarding of the participating groups, in the presence of Mayor Domenico Cartolano, and with the satisfaction expressed by the president of Arte e Mestieri, Antonio Romano.
