Devotion, rituals, and music in the historic center of Gallipoli

The Saints Cosmas and Damian Festival is one of the most deep-rooted religious celebrations in the historic center of Gallipoli, in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento. Every year, in the second half of September, the old town comes alive with sacred rites and secular festivities in honor of the two physician brothers, famous for treating the sick for free and thus venerated as moneyless physicians. Their devotion, widespread throughout Puglia, finds one of its most intense and well-attended expressions in Gallipoli.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the small Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian, nestled among the winding alleys of the historic center on Via San Giovanni. The current building was constructed in 1863 in a neoclassical style, featuring the characteristic pink hue of the local stone, on the site of a pre-existing chapel dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Inside, the single-nave interior preserves the painting depicting the two saints, a destination for the faithful during the festival days.
The religious program includes solemn Eucharistic celebrations and the procession with the statues of the saints through the streets of the old town. The parade is accompanied by the Confraternity of the Most Holy Crucifix and the Santa Cecilia Wind Orchestra - City of Gallipoli, amidst religious hymns, illuminations, and entertainment that mark the passage of the saints through the alleys overlooking the sea.
Alongside the devotional dimension, the festival keeps alive the tradition of secular rites typical of Puglian patronal feasts: artistic luminarie (light displays) that illuminate the historic center, grand brass band concerts hosted in the charming Piazzetta Santa Teresa, evening musical performances, and fireworks that conclude the festival days. It is a blend of the sacred and the profane that represents one of the most authentic traits of Salento culture.
Organized by the Saints Medici Catholic Association with the collaboration of the Municipality of Gallipoli, the festival attracts residents and numerous visitors every year, who find the opportunity to discover the Gallipoli historic center in a guise of lights, music, and popular devotion at the tail end of the Salento summer. An experience that tells the deep identity of Gallipoli and the most authentic Puglia.
The 2026 edition of the Saints Cosmas and Damian Festival is expected in Gallipoli for the end of September, in line with the feast of the two saints celebrated on September 26th. The precise dates and the program of processions, brass band concerts, and secular festivities have not yet been published. This page will be updated as soon as the organization releases the official calendar.
