The feast of the fucanoi and of love in the heart of the Lucanian Dolomites
In Abriola, a village in the province of Potenza nestled in the Lucanian Dolomites at over 950 meters above sea level, Saint Valentine is venerated not only as the protector of lovers but as the saint who, tradition tells, arrived in the village during a great famine and saved it by having carts loaded with grain arrive. Since then, the community has paid tribute to him every year, around February 14th, with one of the most heartfelt festivals in the interior of Basilicata, capable of attracting over two thousand visitors.
The most evocative moment is the lighting of the fucanoi, the large bonfires set up in the different districts of the village. The wood and broom branches are collected by the young people of Abriola, while the other inhabitants bring wine and dishes to share with everyone. Around the flames, people dance and sing folk songs, and the party continues until the last ember dies out. It is a collective ritual that blends religious devotion and community warmth, in which no one remains a stranger.
The event, organized by the Municipality of Abriola together with local associations, unfolds over about ten days with a program that intertwines religious moments and civil initiatives. These range from Health Day with free medical check-ups to the Day of the Sick, theatrical performances, storytellers, and folk music. The calendar also includes a costume parade and events dedicated to couples.
The climax is on February 14th: in the morning, a solemn Holy Mass in the Mother Church, presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Potenza-Muro Lucano-Marsico Nuovo, followed by a procession of the Saint's statue through the streets of the center. In the afternoon, a second Mass with the blessing of engaged couples and couples celebrating their silver and golden anniversaries. In the evening, the lighting and blessing of the fucanoi, accompanied by food and wine tours through the districts, street performances, and tastings.
An authentic festival, far from the commercial clichรฉs of February 14th, where love is expressed as love for the community, tradition, and one's own land.
The 2026 edition of the celebrations in honor of Saint Valentine, patron saint of Abriola, was titled 'The fucanoi festival โ The power of love' and took place from February 7th to 18th. The program combined religious celebrations, social initiatives, and popular festivities, with the usual climax on February 14th.
Among the civil initiatives were Health Day with free medical visits and consultations, the Day of the Sick, a football tournament dedicated to love, theatrical performances, and storytellers. Guests included Katia Buchicchio, Miss Italia 2025.
Start of the celebrations with Health Day: free medical visits and consultations for citizens, in collaboration with local assistance associations.
In the days leading up to February 14th: Day of the Sick, love football tournament, theatrical performances, storytellers, and folk music in the village streets.
Closing of the festivities with tastings, music, and fireworks.
How to get there: Abriola can be reached by car from Potenza in about 30 minutes (SS 407 Basentana and then SP). The nearest train station is Potenza, connected to the RFI network; from there, continue by car or local bus.
Admission: religious events and the fucanoi are free and open to all.
Accommodation: B&Bs and agriturismo facilities are available in the village and in the surrounding Lucanian Dolomites; it is advisable to book in advance.
Tip: wear warm clothing, the altitude is high and it gets very cold in February. Stop at the evening fucanoi to experience the true spirit of the festival.
