The Protectress of Campomaggiore

Our Lady of Mount Carmel — or the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel — has been the protectress of Campomaggiore since the village's inception, and her feast day, on July 16th, is the most cherished moment of the year for the community. The devotion is rooted in the very history of the village: tradition tells that the Madonna saved the inhabitants from the landslide that destroyed the ancient settlement in 1885, having revealed the imminent catastrophe to some farmers. From that event, the new Campomaggiore was born, and the bond between the town and its patron saint was strengthened.

A Festival of Faith and Tradition

The celebrations begin with the novena starting on July 7th. On July 15th, the Candles parade through the village; these are church-shaped sculptures made by the different districts, symbolizing the collective participation of the neighborhoods. On July 16th, the liturgical day of the Virgin of Carmel, the solemn procession takes place through the village streets: the votive women follow the statue barefoot, singing the hymn to the Madonna in a gesture of profound devotion that moves even first-time observers.

Atmosphere and Context

Campomaggiore is famous for the ruins of its "City of Utopia," the 19th-century ideal settlement destroyed by the landslide, now a evocative site to visit. The patronal feast thus combines the religious dimension with the historical memory of the village, in a solemn and authentic atmosphere typical of the towns in the Province of Potenza. Amidst processions, illuminations, band music, and moments of conviviality, July 16th remains the event that best tells the soul of this small Lucanian community.
