Saint Roch, the Saint Close to the People

Albano di Lucania, a small village in the province of Potenza nestled in the heart of Basilicata, celebrates its patron saint Saint Roch every year. The saint from Montpellier, who according to tradition dedicated his life to caring for the sick and the weak, is one of the most venerated saints in the region, patron of over forty Lucanian municipalities. His figure, accompanied by the image of the dog that brought him a piece of bread every day, has made him a deeply popular and beloved saint.

Three Days of Celebration in the Village

The festivities are concentrated around August 18th, with celebrations animating the town on August 17th, 18th, and 19th. The village fills with lights, stalls, and parties in the square, in an atmosphere of shared joy typical of patronal feasts in the South. The community of Albano and the emigrants who return for the occasion gather for faith, music, and conviviality.

The Saint's Procession

The most heartfelt moment is the procession of the statue of Saint Roch through the village streets, usually on the morning of August 18th, accompanied by the brass band and the devotion of the faithful. It is a solemn procession that crosses the historic center, amidst prayers and songs, an authentic expression of Lucanian popular religiosity.

Music and Fireworks

Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers a rich civil program: evening concerts in the square, folk music and tarantellas, culminating in the grand finale with the fireworks display that illuminates the August night. An evening that unites generations and makes Albano di Lucania a meeting point for the entire community.
