The Marian feast with the Flight of the Angel
In Marsico Nuovo, in the heart of the Val d'Agri in the Province of Potenza, the Festival of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the most cherished event by the community after that of the patron saint, San Gianuario. Every year, on the last Sunday of July, the village gathers around the figure of the Virgin in a celebration that intertwines deep popular devotion, religious rites, and traditions passed down through generations.
The most anticipated and spectacular moment of the festival is the Flight of the Angel: a child, dressed as an angel and suspended by a rope above the crowd, recites verses of homage to the Madonna, symbolically initiating the solemn procession that accompanies the simulacrum through the streets of the historic center. It is a tradition of strong emotional impact, which attracts faithful and visitors every year and represents one of the most characteristic popular rites of the Val d'Agri.
Alongside the religious moments, the festival offers shows, music, and opportunities for gathering that liven up the squares of Marsico Nuovo. For those visiting the inner Basilicata, it is an opportunity to discover a village immersed in the greenery of the Lucanian Apennine National Park and to experience firsthand the authenticity of a community deeply connected to its roots and traditions.
The 2026 edition of the Festival of Our Lady of Mount Carmel renews one of the community's most cherished traditions in Marsico Nuovo. The celebration falls, as usual, on the last Sunday of July (presumably July 26th) and culminates in the evocative Flight of the Angel, which kicks off the solemn procession of the Virgin of Mount Carmel's simulacrum through the village streets.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced in the coming weeks.
Based on tradition, the festival takes place on the last Sunday of July and includes liturgical celebrations in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Flight of the Angel, and the solemn procession through the historic center, accompanied by moments of music and entertainment in the squares. Dates and details are published by the parish and the Municipality of Marsico Nuovo.
