About Saint Roch Festival

Every August 16th, Mercato San Severino gathers to honor Saint Roch, the pilgrim and miracle-worker who serves as the town's patron saint. The Saint Roch Patronal Festival weaves together religious devotion—marked by solemn celebrations—and secular festivities, featuring illuminations, market stalls, music, and community gatherings in the town squares. It is the signature summer event for the local community, promoted by the Municipality and open to all with free admission.

A devotion that defines Mercato San Severino

In Mercato San Severino, a town of over twenty thousand inhabitants in the hinterland of the Salerno province, in Campania, August 16th is no ordinary day. It is the feast day of Saint Roch, a 14th-century pilgrim and miracle-worker historically invoked against epidemics and recognized as the town's patron saint. His figure is the heart of the most cherished festival of the year, a time when the town reconnects with its roots and welcomes back those who have returned for the summer.

August 16th: A fixed date

Unlike many summer festivals that change their schedule from year to year, the Saint Roch Patronal Festival is tied to the saint's liturgical calendar and therefore always falls on August 16th. It is a staple of the local calendar: just after Ferragosto, when families are reunited and the evenings are still long and warm, the town prepares to welcome residents and visitors from the Irno Valley and neighboring municipalities.

The religious face of the festival

The core of the day remains devotional: the liturgical celebrations in honor of the patron saint draw the faithful from all the hamlets of the municipal territory. Devotion to Saint Roch in this part of the Salerno province is ancient and profound, manifesting in simple, time-honored gestures—prayers before the statue, ex-votos, and the procession of the saint through the streets of the town center. For many locals, it is a moment where faith becomes a collective experience rather than a private one.

The secular festival: lights, music, and conviviality

Surrounding the religious events is the secular festival, which fills the streets and squares of the town. Illuminations light up the pedestrian paths, market stalls offer sweets, nougat, peanuts, and toys, while the festival evenings traditionally feature live music, marching bands, and entertainment for all ages. The natural meeting point is the center, around Piazza Ettore Imperio and the Palazzo Vanvitelliano, which houses the Town Hall and serves as the main hub for the event.

A full August of festivities in the hamlets

Mercato San Severino includes over twenty hamlets, and the patronal festival is part of a particularly rich summer calendar: from Curteri to Carifi, from Acigliano to Pandola, every village has its own historical feast, its own saint, and its own traditions, often accompanied by fireworks and gastronomic events. Visitors arriving in mid-August will find the area in a festive mood almost every night, with the day of Saint Roch serving as the most symbolic and well-attended moment.

What to see while visiting

The visit is a great opportunity to discover a center in the Salerno hinterland often overlooked by tourist circuits. Don't miss:

  • the Castle of Mercato San Severino, an imposing medieval fortified complex, one of the largest in Southern Italy, which dominates the town from the hill;
  • the Palazzo Vanvitelliano, now the town hall, overlooking Piazza Ettore Imperio;
  • the historic churches of the area, including San Giovanni in Parco and Sant'Antonio;
  • the countryside and the villages of the hamlets, among vineyards, hazelnut groves, and ancient mills.
