Devotion to Saint Rita of Cascia in Dorzano: processions, and the blessing of roses and motorcycles
The Saint Rita Festival is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Dorzano, a small hillside municipality in the Province of Biella, Piedmont, overlooking Lake Viverone amidst vineyards and the ruins of a medieval castle. Promoted by the San Lorenzo Parish in collaboration with the municipal administration, the festival dedicated to Saint Rita of Cascia attracts locals and devotees from neighboring towns every year in late May for a moment that intertwines religious reflection and conviviality.
The heart of the day is the procession that departs from the San Lorenzo church and travels through the village streets, accompanied by the notes of the Cavaglià Philharmonic Band. Along the route and upon return, the most characteristic gestures of devotion to Saint Rita take place: the blessing of motorcycles and vehicles is held in Piazza Battistini, while the traditional blessing of the roses is imparted inside the church.
The blessing of the roses is rooted in an episode from the saint's life: Rita, ill and bedridden, asked her cousin to bring her two figs and a rose from her father's garden; despite it being the dead of winter, her relative found a blooming rose and two ripe figs in the snow. This is the origin of the unbreakable bond between Saint Rita and the rose, a symbol of hope and received graces. The blessing of motorcycles and vehicles is a modern extension of this devotion, now widespread in many Italian communities.
At the end of the celebrations, participants gather in the square for refreshments, an opportunity for meeting and sharing that concludes the day. As Mayor Manuel Gusulfino has emphasized, the collaboration between the municipal administration and the parish represents "an important signal of continuity and cohesion for the entire local community." In a village of just over five hundred inhabitants, the Saint Rita Festival is much more than a ritual: it is an event that keeps the identity of Dorzano and its people alive.
The festival takes place in late May, near the feast day of Saint Rita of Cascia (May 22nd), traditionally on the closest Sunday.
