Opera and grand symphonic concerts at the Greek Theatre of Syracuse
The Lyric Festival of the Stone Theatres is a major summer event that brings opera and symphonic concerts to the most evocative open-air theatres in Sicily. Promoted by the Coro Lirico Siciliano and led by artistic director Francesco Costa, the festival chooses the island's ancient theatres as its stage, from Taormina and Tindari to Segesta. The Syracuse stage, in the Municipality of Syracuse (Province of Syracuse, Sicily), takes place in the extraordinary Greek Theatre of the Neapolis Archaeological Park, one of the most famous classical venues in the world.
Carved into the rock of the Temenite hill in the 5th century BC, the Greek Theatre of Syracuse has always been a symbol of the city. When the lights go down and the cavea fills up, the ancient stone becomes a natural resonance chamber for operatic voices and orchestras: an experience that combines archaeology, landscape, and live music into a single, moving emotion.
The heart of the festival lies in its opera productions. The Syracuse stage has hosted iconic titles from the Verdi repertoire, with direction by Salvo Dolce, the Coro Lirico Siciliano, and nationally renowned orchestras. Alongside opera, the festival features tributes to great film soundtracks, which consistently draw thousands of spectators and sell out repeatedly.
One of the festival's hallmarks is its focus on inclusion: several performances are translated into Sign Language thanks to a partnership with the association "Sicilia, turismo per Tutti," making opera accessible to a wider audience. In this way, the festival combines the promotion of Sicily's archaeological heritage with a significant cultural and social project.
The full program, dates, and ticket sales are published on the festival's official website and through dedicated ticketing channels. We recommend booking in advance, as the Syracuse events frequently sell out.
The 8th edition of the Lyric Festival of the Stone Theatres, titled "Caressing Eternity," presents two highly anticipated evenings at the Greek Theatre of Syracuse. On July 18, 2026, the new production of Giuseppe Verdi's Nabucco will debut, directed by Salvo Dolce, with an international cast led by Elena Mosuc as Abigaille and Badral Chuluumbaatar in the title role. On July 31, 2026, it is time for the grand symphonic tribute to Hans Zimmer, dedicated to the soundtracks of the German composer.
The entire festival, promoted by the Coro Lirico Siciliano and directed by Francesco Costa, runs from July 12 to September 18, 2026, with over 40 events in Sicily's classical theatres.
The Greek Theatre is located in the Neapolis Archaeological Park, in the northwestern area of Syracuse. By car, it can be reached from the A18/RA15 motorway (Syracuse exit) by following signs for the Neapolis Park; parking is available nearby. By train, you arrive at the Syracuse station, which is connected to the site by local buses and taxis.
Tickets can be purchased online through the festival's official ticketing channels. Early booking is highly recommended.
Performances are held in the evening, outdoors: we recommend comfortable clothing and a light jacket for the evening. Syracuse and the island of Ortigia offer numerous accommodation options for your stay during the festival.
