Saint Nicholas Festival and Sacred Manna (Ostia Lido)

A patronal feast on the Roman coast

The Saint Nicholas Festival and Sacred Manna is the annual patronal celebration of the Ostia Lido district, the major maritime municipality of Rome, in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital (Lazio). The heart of the celebration is the Parish of San Nicola di Bari, located at Via Gian Carlo Passeroni 1, which has served as a spiritual and social landmark for the southern area of Ostia since its founding in the 1950s.

This is more than just a liturgical recurrence: for two days, the streets surrounding the parish come alive with stalls, street vendors, music, and families, in that unique blend of sacred and popular traditions that has defined Italian patronal feasts for centuries. It is the moment when this sprawling, recently developed district rediscovers its small-town soul.

The Sacred Manna, a sign from Bari

The most iconic element of the festival is the arrival of the Sacred Manna of Saint Nicholas relic. The Manna is the pure liquid collected every year on May 9th from the Saint's bones, which are kept in the crypt of the Pontifical Basilica of Bari, during the famous Saint Nicholas Festival commemorating the translation of the relics from Myra to Bari in 1087.

In Ostia, the relic is welcomed with a solemn liturgy and then offered to the faithful as a sign of protection and intercession. It represents a direct and living bond between the Roman coast and Puglia, which also explains the dedication of the parish and the presence of a community historically open to the sea and fishing.

The most anticipated moment is the solemn Sunday evening procession. The statue of the patron saint is carried through the streets of the district—including Via delle Fiamme Gialle and Piazza Alberto Alessio—accompanied by the «Ostia Lido» marching band and the prayers of the faithful, invoking blessings upon families and the territory. Decorated balconies, street lighting, and floral tributes from children mark the passage of the pageant.

Alongside the religious rites, the event maintains its popular spirit. The parish garden and adjacent spaces host:

• the traditional porchetta festival, the queen of Lazio gastronomy;
• wine tastings curated by AIS Lazio sommeliers;
• a craft market and a charity book stall;
• stands from local volunteer associations and a Caritas food drive.

Culture, music, and sports

The cultural aspect of the festival revolves around the small traveling museum «Ostia Illustrata»: a private collection of over fifty works including prints, magazines, and historical cartography, featuring original drawings and engravings from the 1500s to the 1900s, with explanatory panels guiding visitors through the key milestones of local history, from ancient Ostia to the seaside city of the 20th century. This is complemented by a photography exhibition by Pino Rampolla and a display of books on the history of ancient and modern Ostia.

Saturday evening is dedicated to the «Promuovi la tua musica» (Promote Your Music) showcase, designed for emerging bands from the coast, while Sunday evening features open-air dancing with the «Locos Latinos» Cuban salsa school. For children, there are games and activities organized by the catechism group; the sporting dimension is also present, with the inauguration and blessing of the new volleyball court named in memory of the young Andrea Mirkopulos.

Why it is worth visiting

It is an authentic, family-friendly, and free neighborhood festival, far from the main tourist circuits but easily accessible from Rome. Visitors to Ostia can easily combine the festival with a stroll along the seafront or a visit to the nearby Ostia Antica Archaeological Park, one of the best-preserved Roman sites in Italy.
