On May 8th, Maddaloni climbs the mountain to mark the apparition of the Archangel, the city's patron saint.
There are dates to which a city is bound more than any other: for Maddaloni, in the Province of Caserta, that date is May 8th. It is the day the city commemorates the apparition of Saint Michael the Archangel, its patron saint, on the mountain that towers over the town and houses the sanctuary dedicated to him. The day begins very early: festive bells wake the people of Maddaloni, signaling the start of a brief cycle of religious celebrations that accompanies the community until the following Sunday.
This is not a food festival or a tourist-oriented event; it is a tradition of popular devotion, lived by the inhabitants of the Municipality of Maddaloni and the faithful from neighboring towns, who climb the mountain throughout the day for prayer, a visit to the sanctuary, or simply to gather. Visitors from outside the region will find an authentic opportunity to understand how deeply rooted the cult of Saint Michael is in this part of Campania.
The Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo and Santa Maria del Monte is located at an altitude of about 424 meters, on the summit of the Tifatini Hills, offering a panoramic view over the Caserta plain. Tradition holds that it was here that the Archangel Michael appeared to a young shepherd around the 7th century. The original structure dates back to the Lombard era, with the first documentary evidence appearing in the medieval period.
The building was extensively remodeled in 1820 and again in the early 20th century, taking on the Neo-Romanesque appearance seen today. In 1993, an open-air church was added to accommodate large crowds of pilgrims, and in 1994, the sanctuary adopted its current name, which pairs the patron saint with the Marian title of Santa Maria del Monte. Among the illustrious pilgrims of the past, the family of King Ferdinand II of Bourbon is remembered for their ascent in 1846 to pay homage to the Archangel.
The cult of Saint Michael in Maddaloni is part of the widespread Michaelic devotion brought to Southern Italy by the Lombards, who recognized the warrior Archangel as their protector. Local tradition links the development of the cult to Princess Teodorata. Since then, the mountain has become the city's spiritual reference point: a high place, visible from every corner of the town, that defines the daily landscape of Maddaloni.
The most recognizable moment of Maddaloni's devotion is the transport of the Archangel's statue. Devotees known as Accollatori carry the effigy on their shoulders during processions, which traditionally take place on the two major Michaelic dates of the year:
It is a service passed down through families and generations, giving the procession a communal character that is far from a mere parade.
The heart of the event remains liturgical: holy masses, moments of prayer, and solemn celebrations presided over by the rector of the sanctuary. Over the years, the festival has been enriched with musical events and sacred performances staged in the picturesque square of Santa Maria del Monte, in front of the sanctuary, involving local associations and schools.
For visitors, the advice is simple: plan the climb up the mountain at a leisurely pace, wear comfortable shoes, and stay until sunset. From the sanctuary square, the view embraces Maddaloni, the Caserta plain, and, on clear days, a horizon that stretches far into the distance.
Maddaloni is one of the historic cities of inland Campania, just a few kilometers from Caserta and its Royal Palace. The center preserves its Castle, the churches of the old town, and the Minor Basilica of Corpus Domini, while at the gates of the city lie the famous Ponti della Valle, the imposing Vanvitellian aqueduct recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Those who choose May 8th for a visit can therefore combine the patronal festival with an itinerary through Bourbon heritage, hilly landscapes, and Caserta gastronomy.
From May 8th to 10th, 2026, the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo and Santa Maria del Monte returned to being the center of spiritual life in Maddaloni. The Apparition anniversary, set as always on May 8th, opened several days of celebrations that drew the faithful from the city and neighboring towns of the Province of Caserta to the mountain.
The culmination of the celebrations took place on Sunday, May 10th, 2026, at 11:30 AM, with a Solemn Mass in honor of the patron saint, presided over by Father Angelo Delli Paoli, rector of the sanctuary. The musical accompaniment for the liturgy was provided by the 'A. Barchetta' Association, directed by Maestro Antonio Barchetta.
The celebration was also included in the calendar of the 24th edition of the city's 'Tu Donna' festival, which in Maddaloni dedicates the month of May to the figure of Mary with a program of religious and artistic events throughout the city. A connection that well represents the bond between Michaelic and Marian devotion guarded by the very title of the sanctuary.
The main celebrations are held at the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo and Santa Maria del Monte, on Mount San Michele overlooking Maddaloni (Province of Caserta, Campania), with additional events in the churches of the city center.
Participation in religious celebrations is free and open to all.
