On July 11th, devotion and brass bands kick off the summer season in the Alburni village
Every year, on July 11th, the village of Sant'Angelo a Fasanella — home to a few hundred inhabitants perched on the slopes of the Alburni Mountains in the province of Salerno — gathers for the Saint Lucy Festival. Unlike the more common winter celebration on December 13th, the saint is honored here in the height of summer: a choice that the local devotional calendar has preserved for generations, making this day the true signal for the start of the village's summer season, when families return to the village and the inland Campania region fills with visitors seeking cool air.
The festival thrives on two registers that alternate without ever overlapping. The first is that of solemn celebrations, with religious rites dedicated to Saint Lucy that mark the day's key moments and draw faithful from neighboring Alburni towns to the village. The second is that of musical entertainment, traditionally entrusted to local brass bands and groups, which transform the squares and alleys into an open-air stage until late at night.
It is a structure typical of religious festivals in the Cilento and Alburni areas, where the band is not just a background element: it accompanies, comments, and then takes center stage as evening falls. Those unfamiliar with these communities are often surprised by the quality of the local brass bands, which maintain a continuity of repertoire and training that is hard to find elsewhere.
For the day of July 11th, 2026, the Municipality announced two musical acts:
In 2026, the Saint Lucy Festival officially opened «Abitare l'Estate» (Living the Summer), the summer calendar of the Municipality of Sant'Angelo a Fasanella: a program of cultural, religious, sports, and food and wine events spread throughout July and August. The same program included the Alburni Summer Lab for children in the Town Hall cloister, Capo la Corte in Festa organized by the Pro Loco, the Caseus cheese day, the Radici e respiro (Roots and Breath) mountain yoga at the Ausoneto Refuge, and above all the Fasanella Fest at the end of August, featuring I Cantori di Carpino, La Tarantula Garganica, and Enzo Avitabile with the Bottari di Portico.
In short, those who arrive for Saint Lucy find a village that has just started its engines: it is the best time to understand how a small community builds its summer around shared identity and collective memory.
Sant'Angelo a Fasanella is located within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park and preserves a heritage that is disproportionate to its size:
The calendar of Sant'Angelo a Fasanella does not end with Saint Lucy: it continues with the feast of the Madonna della Pietà on September 8th and the Mountain Veal and Olive Oil Festival, also in September, which perfectly reflects the agricultural and pastoral vocation of this corner of Campania. The solemn celebrations in honor of Saint Michael the Archangel remain the strongest devotional reference for the community, linked to the cave that gave the village its name.
Visiting the village on July 11th therefore means seeing the Alburni in their most authentic version: a ritual that was not designed for tourists, but to which visitors are naturally welcomed.
With the day of July 11th, 2026, Sant'Angelo a Fasanella kicked off its summer. The Saint Lucy Festival was indeed the first event of the «Abitare l'Estate 2026» calendar, presented by the Municipality as a journey of cultural, religious, sports, and food and wine events spread between July and August in the Alburni Mountains.
The festival's structure respected tradition: solemn celebrations in honor of the saint during the day, then the transition to the musical dimension. In the afternoon, the «Città di Camerota» brass band, a Cilento-based formation, performed; the evening was entrusted to the group «Gli amici della musica», conducted by maestro Luigi Bottiglieri.
The rest of the calendar then brought to the village, between mid and late August, the Caseus cheese day, the Radici e respiro high-altitude yoga at the Ausoneto Refuge, and the three evenings of the Fasanella Fest with I Cantori di Carpino, La Tarantula Garganica, and Enzo Avitabile with the Bottari di Portico. However, Saint Lucy remains the event that, every year, marks the true beginning of the season.
Sant'Angelo a Fasanella (ZIP 84027) is located in the Alburni Mountains, in the province of Salerno. A car is the most practical means of transport: take the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway and continue along the provincial roads that climb towards the village. Public transport connections are limited, especially on holidays.
The festival is concentrated on July 11th, with religious moments during the day and musical performances in the afternoon and evening. Exact times are usually released only a few days before.
Celebrations and musical events take place in the village's public spaces: there is no admission fee.
It is worth combining the festival with a visit to the Cave of Saint Michael the Archangel and the Antece: comfortable shoes are required. For updated times, it is best to contact the Municipality (tel. +39 0828 961006) or the local Pro Loco.
