Livorno's patronal feast blending faith, the sea, and local tradition
The Saint Julia Festival is the heart of the religious and civic identity of Livorno, a Tuscan coastal city that pays tribute to its patron saint every May 22nd. This celebration weaves together Catholic faith and the city's maritime vocation: fittingly, the most evocative moment takes place on the water, along the famous Medici canals that wind through the historic center.
Saint Julia is venerated in Livorno as the city's protector; her relics, which share a historical connection with the city of Brescia, are the focal point of the celebrations. The festival is organized by the Diocese of Livorno in collaboration with the Municipality of Livorno, involving parishes, local choirs, confraternities, and the historic districts with their rowing traditions.
The eve of the festival, May 21st, offers the most moving spectacle: the saint's relics are taken aboard at the Cantina del Palio Marinaro and carried in an aquatic procession along the canals, accompanied by the district rowing boats. The vessel makes brief stops at historic landings—Piazza Cavour, Cantina Ovo Sodo, Il Pontino, and Santa Caterina—before reaching Scali Finocchietti. Here, the relics are brought ashore and carried on foot to Piazza Grande, in front of the Cathedral, where they are welcomed by the Diocesan Choir and the Bishop's blessing.
On May 22nd, the feast day, the morning is dedicated to the Saint Julia Palio, a rowing race held in the waters off the Fortezza Nuova, showcasing Livorno's rich rowing heritage. In the afternoon, the city gathers in the Cathedral of San Francesco for a solemn Eucharistic celebration; afterward, the procession heads to the port for the blessing of the sea and the city, followed by a return to the Cathedral and the distribution of the characteristic blessed bread of Saint Julia.
Throughout the Province of Livorno and all of Tuscany, this festival is known as an event that unites spirituality, folklore, and neighborhood spirit. It is a unique opportunity to discover Livorno from a different perspective—that of its canals and its profound bond with the sea—on a day when the entire city gathers around its patron saint.
The 2026 edition confirmed the traditional program of Livorno's patronal feast, with two days of celebrations on May 21st and 22nd and a calendar of religious events spread from May 12th to 22nd.
The central moment was the aquatic procession of the relics along the Medici canals and the Saint Julia Palio at the Fortezza Nuova, followed by the blessing of the sea and the distribution of the blessed bread.
The festival takes place on May 21st and 22nd, with May 22nd being the official feast day.
The main locations are the Medici canals in the historic center, Piazza Grande with the Cathedral of San Francesco, and the Fortezza Nuova for the rowing Palio, in Livorno (Tuscany).
Livorno is served by the Livorno Centrale railway station, with excellent connections to Pisa and Florence. By car, it can be reached via the SS1 Aurelia and the FI-PI-LI highway. The festival venues are located in the city center and are easily accessible on foot.
Religious celebrations, the procession, and the Palio are free and open to everyone.
