About Saint Joseph's in Lascari

Every March 19th, Lascari, a small village in the province of Palermo, celebrates Saint Joseph with one of Sicily's most authentic traditions. Along Via Libertà, the Tavolata dei Virgineddi is set up—widely considered the longest Saint Joseph's banquet in Italy. Over a hundred meters of tables are laden with votive dishes from peasant cuisine, shared by hundreds of diners. On the eve of the feast, the Vampa, a massive bonfire, illuminates the village, while traditional Saint Joseph's Altars are prepared in private homes. It is a ritual of faith, community, and solidarity, currently a candidate for UNESCO recognition.

A festival that is a living heritage of Sicily

The Saint Joseph's Feast in Lascari, nestled in the heart of the Palermo province, is far more than a religious observance: it is a cultural legacy that the village has guarded for centuries. Every year, around March 19th, the entire community gathers to honor the patriarch saint—protector of the poor, orphans, and young maidens—with rituals that weave together devotion, votive gastronomy, and a deep sense of solidarity.

The Tavolata dei Virgineddi, the longest in Italy

The heart of the celebration is the famous Tavolata dei Virgineddi, set up along Via Libertà: a banquet stretching over one hundred meters, considered the longest in Italy dedicated to Saint Joseph. Hundreds of guests sit down in shifts to share traditional peasant dishes, a symbol of offering and gratitude. The name refers to the "virgineddi," the children who were once served first in memory of the Holy Family during their flight to Egypt. Originally, wealthy families would open their homes to the poor in an act of charity that still defines the spirit of the celebration today.

Traditional votive dishes

The table features classic Sicilian peasant cuisine, prepared with long-lasting local ingredients:

  • Homemade pasta with legumes (chickpeas, lentils) and broccoli;
  • Rice with beans;
  • Fried cod with wild fennel;
  • Seasonal vegetables, fennel, and oranges;
  • The essential sfince di San Giuseppe, the festival's signature pastry, alongside cannoli and almond cookies.

Alongside the food, you will find Saint Joseph's votive breads, hand-molded into symbolic shapes: flowers, trees, and even carpenter's tools, honoring the saint's trade.

The Vampa and the Altars

On the eve of the feast, March 18th, the Vampa di San Giuseppe is lit—a massive bonfire that lights up the village. Tradition holds that it represents the warmth offered to the saint and the light of spring overcoming winter. In private homes, Saint Joseph's Altars are set up, decorated with embroidered fabrics and laden with votive food. On the day of the feast, a solemn procession carries the statue of the saint through the village streets.

Towards UNESCO recognition

In January 2024, mayors from ten Sicilian municipalities where this tradition remains vibrant gathered in Lascari to launch the bid for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status. As the president of the local Pro Loco noted, this is not merely a festival, but a cultural legacy to be preserved in its centuries-old authenticity. Experiencing the Saint Joseph's Feast in Lascari means immersing yourself in the true soul of Sicily and the folk traditions of the Madonie mountains.
