The fire ritual of Saint Joseph, intangible heritage of the Corleto Perticara community
In the heart of the province of Potenza, Corleto Perticara preserves an ancient ritual linked to the feast of Saint Joseph: the Bonfire Night. Every year, around March 19th, a large pyre is erected and lit in Piazza Plebiscito, around which the entire community gathers on a night of fire, faith, and sharing.
Saint Joseph's bonfire has its roots in the propitiatory rites of the seasonal change, when fire marked the end of winter and the anticipation of spring. In Corleto, this tradition is so deeply felt that it has been recognized by the Basilicata Region as intangible heritage of the community, as part of the actions to protect Lucanian cultural heritage.
The event is not just lighting the fire: it is a two-day journey that intertwines educational, spiritual, and festive moments. It begins with meetings dedicated to the symbolic value of fire and rites of passage, continues with theatre and prayer, culminating in the blessing and lighting of the bonfire, accompanied by the #Accendilatradizione initiative.
When the flames rise into the March sky, the square comes alive with live music and gastronomic stands of the Pro Loco Corletana, where Saint Joseph's zeppole and typical Lucanian products are a must. This is the moment when the ritual becomes a celebration, and the community—residents and Corletani returning home—gathers around the warmth of the bonfire.
Organized by the Pro Loco Corletana APS with UNPLI Basilicata, and sponsored by the Basilicata Region and the Municipality of Corleto Perticara, the Bonfire Night is today an example of how a small village in the Potentino hinterland transforms its tradition into identity, memory, and an occasion for gathering.
The 2026 edition of the Bonfire Night was celebrated on March 18th and 19th in Corleto Perticara, under the banner of the recent recognition of the ritual as intangible heritage of the community by the Basilicata Region. Two days of education, theatre, liturgy, and popular celebration culminated in the lighting of the great bonfire in Piazza Plebiscito.
How to get there: Corleto Perticara can be reached by car from the Basentana highway and the roads of the Potentino hinterland; the provincial capital Potenza is about an hour away.
Admission: Free entry to Piazza Plebiscito and other locations in the village.
Period: March 18-19, for Saint Joseph's feast; the weather is still wintry, warm clothing is recommended.
