The feast of the Assumption in the village of Val d'Agri
The Patronal Feast of the Assumption of Mary is one of the most important and well-attended religious celebrations in Gallicchio, a small village in the Val d'Agri, in the province of Potenza. The Assumption of the Virgin into heaven is at the center of Catholic devotion and is experienced with particular fervor in Gallicchio, as the patron saint of the summer season.
The feast intertwines religious and civil moments: the heart of the day is the Solemn Holy Mass in the parish church, followed by the procession that winds through the village streets. Around the celebrations, popular festivities develop, which also attract emigrants and families originally from Gallicchio, for whom Ferragosto is an occasion for return and reunion.
Nestled in the hills of Val d'Agri, the Municipality of Gallicchio, in the Province of Potenza, preserves the authentic atmosphere of Lucanian villages. The feast of the Assumption is one of the moments when this identity becomes most alive, uniting the community in devotion and conviviality.
The feast of the Assumption in Gallicchio is held around Ferragosto (mid-August): in 2025 the main celebration took place on August 10th, while traditionally it falls on the Sunday closest to August 15th. The exact date for 2026 will be defined and communicated by the parish.
The detailed religious and civil program for 2026 will be communicated by the parish and the festival committee in the weeks preceding the event.
