Latronico celebrates its patron saint and the miracle of the Holy Manna
In Latronico, a town in the Pollino National Park in the province of Potenza, devotion to Saint Giles the Abbot is not a mere cult: it is the very soul of the community. This is expressed in a proverb that the people of Latronico have repeated for generations - "Take it up with the Almighty, but leave Saint Giles alone" - testifying to how inseparable the patron saint is from local identity. The patronal feast on September 1st is the culmination of this bond.
Devotion to Saint Giles is fueled by an extraordinary phenomenon, the Holy Manna: within the Pontifical Minor Basilica, a honey-colored liquid emerges from an ancient fresco depicting a doe on one or more Fridays in March. According to popular tradition, the absence of the miracle portends difficult times for the town: for this reason, the people of Latronico watch it with trepidation and deep faith.
The celebrations are preceded by the novena, particularly heartfelt days that spiritually prepare the faithful. On September 1st, the town experiences the religious aspect with a solemn Mass in the mother church and the procession that winds through the streets of the center, and the civil aspect with the market, musical entertainment, and the engaging neighborhood palio that pits the town's districts against each other.
Promoted by the Parish of Saint Giles the Abbot together with the Municipality of Latronico, the feast is a moment of gathering for the entire community, including the many families of emigrants who return to their hometown precisely to honor the patron saint. It is an opportunity to rediscover the historic center, the basilica, and the hospitality of a Lucanian village deeply connected to its traditions.
Even in 2026, on September 1st, Latronico will honor its patron saint Saint Giles the Abbot. The feast, preceded by the novena, will alternate religious moments - solemn Mass and procession - with civil events featuring the market, the neighborhood palio, and musical entertainment.
The detailed religious and civil program for the 2026 edition will be published by the Parish of Saint Giles the Abbot and the Municipality of Latronico in the preceding days. The traditional structure includes:
