The great fire of March 19th in Piazza Luigi Di Capua, featuring music, local delicacies, and the conviviality of the Alta Irpinia region.
The Saint Joseph's Bonfire is one of the most heartfelt events in the calendar of Bagnoli Irpino, a village in the Alta Irpinia area of the Province of Avellino, in Campania. Every year, on March 19th, the day the Church celebrates Saint Joseph, the community gathers around a large fire lit in the square: a ritual that symbolically marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring at the gates of the Laceno plateau.
The bonfire is more than just a scenic attraction. It is the focal point of the entire evening: people stand near the flames to keep warm, chat, enjoy a glass of wine, and listen to music. It is a form of village social life that remains unchanged in Alta Irpinia and, evening after evening, brings different generations together.
The Bagnoli custom of the Saint Joseph's fires is ancient: local memory tells of bonfires lit in the various neighborhoods of the town, with people gathering around the flames to dance and taste the traditional pastries of the occasion. Today's event stems from that widespread practice, concentrating the ritual into a single square and opening it up to visitors.
Moreover, on March 19th, the entire South of Italy celebrates the season of zeppole di San Giuseppe: fried pastries that have always accompanied the feast and which, in Irpinia, can be found on family tables as well as in the counters of local pastry shops.
The event takes place in Piazza Luigi Di Capua, in the heart of the historic center, from late afternoon until midnight. The program revolves around three elements:
There is no entrance fee: access to the square is free, and you only pay for what you consume at the stalls. It is a community celebration, not a ticketed event.
Bagnoli Irpino is a land of bold and recognizable products: black truffle, which has one of the most popular festivals in the region at the end of October, mountain cheeses, chestnuts, and dishes from the Irpinian peasant cuisine. The stalls on March 19th offer an opportunity for an early out-of-season taste of this pantry, at a time of year when the village is not yet crowded by summer tourist flows.
At an altitude of just over 600 meters and a few kilometers from the Laceno plateau — with its lake, ski facilities, and hiking trails of the Picentini Mountains — Bagnoli Irpino is one of the reference points of the Campanian mountains. Coming for the bonfire also means discovering a village that thrives on tradition, forests, and gastronomy, halfway between Avellino and the Sele Valley.
The event is promoted by the Pro Loco Bagnoli Irpino-Laceno in collaboration with the «Vincenzo Nigro» Youth Group and with the patronage of the Municipality of Bagnoli Irpino. It is an entirely volunteer-run organization, as is the case for most traditional festivals in Irpinia: the local youth take care of gathering the wood, setting up the square, and managing the stalls.
For the 2026 Feast of Saint Joseph, the community of Bagnoli Irpino gathered, as per tradition, around the bonfire lit in Piazza Luigi Di Capua. The event, scheduled for Thursday, March 19th, from 6:00 PM until midnight, confirmed the formula that has made this evening one of the most attended events in the Alta Irpinia calendar over the years.
The heart of the event was the evocative bonfire, around which moments of conviviality and entertainment took place. Around the fire, there were:
