Artari, votive breads, and the patron saint's procession in the heart of the Belìce Valley

In Salaparuta, a town of just over a thousand inhabitants nestled in the Belìce Valley, in the province of Trapani, the Saint Joseph Feast is the most cherished event of the year. Saint Joseph has been the town's patron since 1977, and his feast, which falls annually around March 19th, mobilizes families, brotherhoods, and associations for a week of civil and religious rites. It is one of the celebrations where the deep soul of this Belìce village truly shines, alongside the devotion to the Blessed Virgin of Piraino.
The heart of the festival lies in the artari (Saint Joseph's altars), set up in private homes and public spaces throughout the town as a vow of devotion or a thanksgiving for a grace received. These are multi-tiered structures adorned with laurel branches and a triumph of breads: the altar, locals in Salaparuta say, "is a triumph of colors that conveys a sense of abundance." At the center, the image of the Holy Family always takes pride of place. In recent years, the number of artari set up across Salaparuta, Poggioreale, and Santa Ninfa has exceeded fifteen, open to the faithful on the afternoon of March 18th.
Devotion is expressed primarily through bread, molded into a thousand shapes. Essential items include the cucciddata (at least three, symbolizing the Holy Family) and the spera, an ornamental monstrance made of fig dough featuring the monogram of Jesus. Traditional dishes include pasta with tomato sauce, cauliflower, wild fennel, and toasted breadcrumbs. The most moving moment is the Tavolata dei Santi: three children representing the Holy Family, after having their hands washed with red wine, are invited to sit at the altar and taste all the prepared dishes. Leftovers are distributed to relatives and friends, and on March 18th, sweets, bread, and chickpeas are offered to visitors without expecting anything in return.
The calendar spans four days, from March 16th to 19th, each marked by a mass at the Church of the Most Holy Trinity and dedicated to a specific community group (families, the Saint Joseph Association, parish groups). On March 18th, solemn Vespers are celebrated, followed by the mayor's act of entrusting the city to the saint and the tour of the artari. March 19th, the feast day, opens with a marching band parade through the streets, the solemn pontifical mass celebrated by the Bishop of the Diocese of Mazara del Vallo, and a classic vintage car show in Piazza Mercato. In the late afternoon, the procession of the Saint Joseph statue winds through the center, while the day concludes with a fireworks display.
At the moment, the program and official dates for the 2026 edition of the Saint Joseph Feast in Salaparuta have not yet been announced. Based on previous editions, the festivities are expected to take place around March 19th, the saint's liturgical feast, with the usual multi-day structure: setting up artari in homes, visiting the altars, masses at the Church of the Most Holy Trinity, the Table of the Saints, the statue's procession, and fireworks. The detailed program will be released by the parish and the Municipality in the weeks leading up to the event.
The festivities traditionally take place from March 16th to 19th, with the highlight on the feast day, March 19th. Dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced.
