The night of the Artari and the Feast of the Saints in the heart of inland Sicily
The Saint Joseph Festival in Leonforte, in the heart of the Enna province, is one of the most deeply rooted traditions in inland Sicily. Celebrated for nearly four centuries in honor of Saint Joseph, the town's co-patron, it commemorates the Saint's passing on March 18th and 19th. It is not merely a religious celebration: it is a collective ritual involving entire families, neighborhoods, and parishes, capable of drawing thousands of visitors to Leonforte from all over Sicily.
The heart of the festival lies in the Artari (altars), set up in homes by devotees who have made a vow to the Saint. These are multi-tiered structures, adorned with a "canopy" made from bridal veils and a sacred image, transforming living rooms into small churches. On these altars, cuddure are placed—ritual breads expertly hand-sculpted: the one for Jesus bears the symbols of the Passion, while the one for Saint Joseph features the carpenter's tools (axes, saws, hammers, nails). Alongside the bread, vegetables, legumes, sweets, and traditional dishes are arranged in an offering that evokes "u cunzulu da beddamatri".
In the days leading up to the festival, the community engages in traficu, the tireless collective preparation work: women cook the votive dishes, while men gather wild herbs and wood for the large pots. As they say in Leonforte, "S. Giuseppi voli traficu" (Saint Joseph wants hard work and sacrifice). On the night between March 18th and 19th, the most fascinating moment takes place: the girata dill'Artari, a pilgrimage through the alleys of the historic center to visit the illuminated altars. Along the way, children recite raziuneddi, prayers in dialect about the life of Jesus, receiving pupiddi as gifts—small blessed breads worn like necklaces.
At noon on March 19th, the Feast of the Saints (or the Virgineddi table) takes place: actors portray the Holy Family—Saint Joseph, the Madonna, and the Baby Jesus—and take their seats in front of the altar, where the prepared food is symbolically served to them. After the washing of the feet and the blessing, the dishes are distributed to those present: cardoons, fennel fritters, fava beans, and chickpeas are offered to the hundreds of visitors, in a gesture of sharing that embodies the very essence of the festival.
On the evening of March 19th, the statue of Saint Joseph is carried in a procession through the streets of Leonforte's historic center, concluding the festivities. The heritage of this tradition is also preserved in the Museum of the Cuddura, which displays historical examples of these ritual breads. A festival that, in the province of Enna and throughout Sicily, remains a benchmark for those wishing to experience popular devotion in its most authentic form.
The 2026 Saint Joseph Festival in Leonforte renewed the four-century-old tradition with 18 Artari set up by devotees, 16 in the historic center of Leonforte and 2 in nearby Nissoria. On the night between March 18th and 19th, the evocative girata dill'Artari took place, while at noon on the 19th, the traditional Feast of the Saints brought the community together around the Holy Family. The day of the 19th concluded with the solemn procession of the statue of Saint Joseph through the town streets.
Leonforte is located in the province of Enna, in central Sicily. By car, it can be reached via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Mulinello exit) or the SS117. The Leonforte-Pirato train station is on the Palermo-Catania line, but it is far from the center: a car is recommended.
The festival is concentrated on March 18th and 19th, with the highlight occurring on the night between the 18th and 19th (girata dill'Artari) and at noon on the 19th (Feast of the Saints).
The Artari can be visited for free in the open homes of the historic center. Wear comfortable shoes for the night-time walk through the alleys. Votive dishes are distributed to visitors free of charge.
