About Saint Joseph Niscemi

Every March 18th and 19th, Niscemi, in the heart of the Caltanissetta province, celebrates one of Sicily's most heartfelt popular traditions: the Saint Joseph Festival. The "avutari"—spectacular votive altars set up in homes and churches—are adorned with artistic bread, sweets, and local produce. On the evening of March 18th, bonfires are lit on street corners, while at noon on the 19th, the "Manciata dei Santi" (Meal of the Saints) takes place, followed in the afternoon by the charity auction of votive breads in front of the Church of Saint Joseph.

An ancient devotion in the heart of Sicily

The Saint Joseph Festival in Niscemi, located in the municipality of Niscemi in the province of Caltanissetta, is one of the most deeply rooted and widely attended popular traditions in Sicily. Celebrated every year on March 18th and 19th, it weaves together faith, gastronomy, and ancient agrarian symbolism linked to the awakening of nature in spring. For the Niscemi community, Saint Joseph, known as "u Patriarca," is a central figure of profound devotion, honored through a collective ritual that involves entire families and neighborhoods.

The avutari: jewels of devotion and creativity

The heart of the festival lies in the avutari, domestic votive altars that devotees set up to fulfill a vow and thank the saint for blessings received by their families. Scenographically constructed with veils, lights, and traditional objects, they host artistic bread, typical sweets, and seasonal produce. The shapes of the bread tell the story of the Holy Family: Saint Joseph's staff adorned with lilies, Mary's bread with roses and palm leaves, and Jesus's bread with jasmine and symbols of the Passion.

  • The altars can be visited from 3:00 PM on March 18th until 12:00 PM on March 19th
  • They remain open during the evenings of the novenas, set up in private homes and churches such as the Church of Saint Joseph and the Church of the Sacred Heart

Novenas and bonfires

Starting from March 12th, the novenas—popular religious songs recounting the seven joys and seven sorrows of Saint Joseph—resonate every evening in front of the altars, with times varying between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM. On the evening of March 18th, around 5:30 PM, the evocative tradition of the vampe (bonfires) comes to life: piles of wood are lit at street corners, around which the community gathers. The bonfires are followed by the roasting of the Niscemi violet artichoke, a signature local product, which is grilled and shared among those present.

The Manciata dei Santi and the votive auction

At noon on March 19th, the most moving moment is celebrated: the Manciata dei Santi, during which three people chosen from among the most needy in the community—representing Joseph, Mary, and Jesus—are welcomed and served at the altars as a sign of charity and hospitality. In the afternoon, in front of the Church of Saint Joseph, the auction of votive breads takes place: the auctioneer puts the remaining items from the avutari up for bid, and the proceeds are donated to charity, confirming the spirit of solidarity that has always characterized the festival.

A heritage of the Niscemi community

Blending religious devotion, rural symbolism, and solidarity, the Saint Joseph Festival captures the most authentic identity of Niscemi and inland Sicily. It is an event that unites the community and attracts curious visitors every year, all eager to discover one of the most genuine expressions of Sicilian folklore.

Saint Joseph Niscemi — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Saint Joseph Festival in Niscemi took place on March 18th and 19th, confirming the vitality of this deeply felt tradition: 21 votive altars (avutari) were set up across private homes and churches, with the presence of the Bishop of Syracuse and the relics of Saint Anthony of Padua. The event featured the traditional bonfires on the evening of the 18th, the Manciata dei Santi on the 19th, and the charity auction of votive breads.
