The Holy Family procession: a blend of faith, charity, and local tradition
On March 19th, the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, the town of Francofonte (province of Syracuse) pauses for one of the most beloved events in the local calendar. In a village founded around 1360 by the nobleman Artale Alagona and rebuilt after the devastating 1693 earthquake, the Saint Joseph Festival is much more than a religious appointment: it is a choral representation of the town's identity, where popular devotion merges with a concrete gesture of charity toward those in need.
The element that makes the Francofonte festival unique is the Holy Family procession. On the morning of March 19th, three participants, chosen by lottery from among the town's poorest residents, don costumes and halos to portray Saint Joseph, the Madonna, and the Child. The three figures parade through the main streets of the historic center accompanied by a brass band, eventually reaching the Mother Church of Sant'Antonio Abate, overlooking Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III, where a solemn mass is celebrated.
A distinctively Francofonte tradition accompanies the procession: behind each of the three figures walks a person holding a four-cornered handkerchief, into which the faithful drop their offerings. This is the tangible sign of the festival's solidarity, transforming devotion to Saint Joseph into real support for the poorest families in the community.
Once the procession concludes, a laid table is set up in the square where the Holy Family eats lunch in full view of the entire town. In the afternoon, the traditional auction of gifts donated by the faithful takes place: food, local produce, andโaccording to a deeply rooted local customโthe famous sparici sabbaggi, the bunches of wild asparagus that abound in the countryside around Francofonte in spring. The proceeds from the auction, added to the offerings collected during the procession, are divided equally among the three participants, ideally closing the circle of charity.
The Saint Joseph Festival is part of the rich landscape of Sicilian celebrations dedicated to the Patriarch, but in Francofonte, it takes on unique traits thanks to the gift cart, the "Giro dei Santi," and the choice of the poor as protagonists. Known as the "City of Citrus" for its prized Tarocco, Moro, and Sanguinello blood oranges, Francofonte offers visitors the chance to discover an authentic corner of southeastern Sicily, amidst devotion, gastronomy, and collective memory.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Joseph Festival in Francofonte took place on Thursday, March 19, 2026, on the occasion of the Patriarch's solemnity. The morning featured the traditional Holy Family procession through the streets of the historic center, with the three participants and the brass band, leading to the solemn mass at the Mother Church of Sant'Antonio Abate.
In the afternoon, the auction of gifts donated by the faithful was held, with the proceeds divided among the three participants according to the town's ancient tradition of solidarity.
The detailed schedule for the day follows the traditional pattern of the Francofonte festival: in the morning, the Holy Family procession departs from the historic center with the band and reaches the Mother Church of Sant'Antonio Abate for the solemn mass; this is followed by the banquet in the square for the Holy Family and, in the afternoon, the auction of donated gifts. Precise times for the 2026 edition are announced by the Municipality and the parish in the days leading up to the festival.
Francofonte is located in southeastern Sicily, on the border between the provinces of Syracuse and Catania. By car, it can be reached via the SS194 Catania-Ragusa; the nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa (about 50 km away). The reference railway station is Lentini, which is connected by local bus lines.
Events are concentrated in the historic center, with the epicenter being the Mother Church of Sant'Antonio Abate in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III.
Participation in the festival and the procession is free and open to everyone.
