Procession of the statue, votive altars, and the great bonfire in the heart of Cinisi
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Saint Joseph Festival is one of the most beloved traditions in Cinisi, a town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo overlooking the Gulf of Castellammare, at the foot of Monte Pecoraro. Around March 19th, the day dedicated to Saint Joseph, the entire town comes together to honor the Saint with a celebration that blends religious observance with ancient folk traditions, featuring rural rites, communal meals, and propitiatory fire.
The solemn highlight of the festival is the procession of the statue of Saint Joseph, which winds through the streets of the historic center amidst the moving participation of the faithful. The parade accompanies the Saint through the town and concludes in an atmosphere of great collective emotion, with fireworks illuminating the sky over Cinisi.
At the heart of the Cinisi tradition are the mense (or tavolate) di San Giuseppe: during the festival, various gathering points are set up where the community prepares votive tables in honor of the Saint. These altars are adorned with votive bread, seasonal produce, and traditional dishes, following an ancient ritual meant to welcome everyone and renew the spirit of solidarity. Visiting these altars, open to both locals and visitors, is one of the most characteristic aspects of this event: the bread, shaped into symbolic forms, becomes a gift, an offering, and a tool for sharing.
The most spectacular and identity-defining element is the vampata, the large traditional bonfire lit in the square. The 'vampata' recalls a purely rural world: in the Sicilian countryside, upon the arrival of spring and in the days preceding sowing, farmers would gather around enormous fires made of straw and hay left over from the previous year's harvest to invoke abundance for the new crops. In Cinisi, this gesture is renewed every year, merging Christian devotion and agricultural memory into one great community celebration.
The Saint Joseph Festival in Cinisi is part of the broader Sicilian tradition of tavolate and vampe di San Giuseppe, which are widespread throughout the island and particularly in the province of Palermo. For those visiting Sicily in spring, it is an authentic opportunity to experience a popular festival far from the usual tourist circuits, where faith, food, and fire tell the story of the territory's rural soul.
At the moment, the Municipality of Cinisi and the organizers have not yet released the official dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Saint Joseph Festival. As it is a religious event tied to the calendar, the festival traditionally takes place around March 19th, the day dedicated to the Saint.
Based on previous editions, we expect the return of the procession of the statue of Saint Joseph through the streets of the historic center, the setting up of votive altars with bread and seasonal produce, and the great vampata in the square. The detailed program will be updated as soon as it is made public.
The festival revolves around March 19th, the feast day of Saint Joseph. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced.
