Menfi's centuries-old devotion to Patriarch Saint Joseph, featuring votive altars and solidarity
In Menfi, a town in the Agrigento province nestled in the Belìce valley, the cult of Saint Joseph is rooted in centuries of history. During the 18th century, devotion to the Patriarch became deeply embedded in the local population, eventually surpassing even the intensity of the devotion to the town's patron saint, Anthony of Padua. His feast day fell in the heart of the wheat harvest—an exhausting labor upon which the survival of farming families depended—leading the faithful to turn to the saint who protects the humble and the workers.
The heart of the festival is the Tavolata di San Giuseppe, a grand, lavishly decorated altar that the faithful prepare as a sign of gratitude for a grace received. The table is filled with votive breads shaped like staffs or religious symbols, vegetables and legumes, cooked and raw cereals, citrus fruits, bay leaves, and traditional Sicilian sweets such as sfincia and pignolata. Everything is prepared thanks to the contributions of volunteers and devotees of the community.
The Tavolata originated as a gesture of Christian charity: the food displayed on the altar is shared and offered to those experiencing hardship. It is a ritual that weaves together spirituality, the island's rural culture, and a sense of community, drawing both locals and visitors to the figure of Patriarch Saint Joseph every year.
In Menfi, Saint Joseph is celebrated twice: on March 19th, the official date of the liturgical calendar, and on the second Sunday of August, as a thanksgiving for the summer harvest. After World War II, some festivities were moved to the summer to welcome emigrants returning to their hometown, but the March celebration, with its votive table, remains the most authentic expression of this devotion.
Known for its wines and the beaches of the Agrigento coast, Menfi preserves in this festival the most intimate soul of inland Sicily: one of popular faith, sharing, and hospitality. Participating in the Tavolata di San Giuseppe means connecting with a living tradition, passed down from generation to generation in the heart of the Agrigento province.
The 2026 edition of the Tavolata di San Giuseppe in Menfi took place on Thursday, March 19. The day began at 10:00 AM with Holy Mass at the Mother Church of Beata Maria Vergine del Soccorso, presided over by the parish priest, Father Salvatore Fiore. Following this, the blessing and opening of the votive table took place at the Agorà, remaining open to visitors throughout the day. The celebration concluded at 8:30 PM with a convivial gathering and the tasting of the Saint Joseph soup and other dishes prepared for the occasion.
Every year on March 19th, with a second celebration on the second Sunday of August.
