The Patriarch's feast in Balestrate, featuring votive altars, a solemn procession, and the fried Sfincia Festival.
The Saint Joseph Feast is one of the most anticipated events in Balestrate, a small town on the Tyrrhenian coast in the province of Palermo, Sicily. Every year, around March 19th, the entire town gathers around the figure of the Patriarch with a devotion passed down through generations, made of prayer, sharing, and ancient culinary traditions.
The most characteristic sign of the festival are the votive altars, set up in private homes by local families out of devotion or as a votive offering. Houses hosting an altar are recognizable by the palm branches placed at the entrance. On these tables of Saint Joseph, one can find the fruits of the early spring, dishes made with seasonal vegetables, and above all, the blessed breads: loaves modeled into elaborate and symbolic shapes, true works of art prepared in all of Balestrate's bakeries. Alongside the bread, there is no shortage of typical sweets, from sfincia to casateddi and ricotta cannoli.
Among the most peculiar elements of the Balestrate tradition is the performance of the Parts of Saint Joseph, a popular re-enactment of the flight into Egypt of Jesus, Joseph, and Mary, passed down orally over time. It is an intangible heritage that binds the community to its religious and rural history.
The celebrations are concentrated on March 18th and 19th. On the evening of the 18th, the altars open with solemn Vespers and Holy Mass at the Sant'Anna Mother Church, followed by the distribution of blessed bread and a tour of the altars, marked by traditional chants in the local dialect. On March 19th, the Saint's day, the streets of the center are filled with the sound of drums from the morning, while in the afternoon, the statue of the Patriarch is carried in a solemn procession, accompanied by a marching band. The day concludes with a fireworks display.
The religious dimension is accompanied by a more convivial and gastronomic one: the Sant'Anna Parish organizes the traditional fried Sfincia Festival, a delicious moment that attracts residents and visitors alike. The Saint Joseph sfincia, a soft, typical Sicilian fritter, is prepared and served hot, along with other festival sweets. It is the ideal occasion to discover the flavors of traditional Sicilian pastry linked to this celebration.
The 2026 edition opened on Wednesday, March 18th at the Sant'Anna Mother Church with solemn Vespers and Holy Mass, followed by the distribution of blessed bread and a tour of the altars set up in the town center.
