Faith, fire, and tradition in the medieval village of Cefalù
The Saint Joseph Feast is one of the most deeply rooted traditions in Cefalù, a charming medieval village overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea in the province of Palermo, in the heart of Sicily. Celebrated annually on March 18th and 19th, the festival combines the religious devotion to the Patriarch with the ancient allure of fire and local culinary flavors, in a blend of the sacred and the profane typical of Sicilian festivities.
The scenic heart of the event is the Vampa of Saint Joseph, the great bonfire that burns on the eve of the feast in front of the majestic Cathedral Basilica, a masterpiece of Arab-Norman architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The flames reflecting on the church's facade represent a ritual of light and community: around the fire, the people of Cefalù gather to share a festive moment that traces its roots back to ancient propitiatory rites linked to the arrival of spring.
The Vampa is invariably accompanied by the tasting of Saint Joseph's sfinci, soft flour and egg fritters covered in delicious ricotta cream: the iconic dessert of the festival, prepared by the pastry shops and cafes of the historic center. The tasting in Piazza del Duomo turns the evening into a convivial gathering that attracts both residents and visitors.
On March 19th, the day of the solemnity, celebrations take place between the Saint Joseph Rectory on Via Umberto I and the Cathedral Basilica, featuring the blessing and distribution of blessed bread, a gesture of charity and sharing dear to the Josephite tradition. In the afternoon, the solemn procession of the Saint's statue winds through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the town band: a pageant that traverses the medieval alleys to the square, amidst the moving participation of the community.
Organized by the Confraternity of Saint Joseph together with the Cathedral Basilica, the Rectory, and the City of Cefalù, the festival represents a key identity event for the municipality. For visitors, it is the perfect opportunity to discover one of Italy's most beautiful villages in an authentic setting, far from the summer crowds, immersed in the rites, scents, and flavors of the truest Sicily.
The 2026 Saint Joseph Feast in Cefalù opened with the triduum from March 16th to 18th at the Saint Joseph Rectory and the Cathedral Basilica. On the evening of Wednesday, March 18th, at 7:00 PM in Piazza del Duomo, the sfinci tasting and symbolic Vampa were held, sponsored by Il Caffè di Ruggero, Bar Duomo, and Cathedral Coffee. On Thursday, March 19th, the day of the solemnity, Eucharistic celebrations took place at the Rectory and the Cathedral (at 9:30 AM and 5:00 PM, the latter presided over by Mons. Giuseppe Licciardi, Vicar General of the Diocese of Cefalù), with the blessing and distribution of bread. At 6:00 PM, the solemn procession traversed the historic center with the participation of the V. M. Pintorno Band.
Cefalù is easily accessible by train: the station is a few minutes' walk from the historic center and is served by the Palermo-Messina line. By car, take the A20 Palermo-Messina motorway and exit at Cefalù. The nearest airport is Palermo Falcone-Borsellino, about an hour away.
The main events are concentrated in Piazza del Duomo, in front of the Cathedral, and at the Saint Joseph Rectory on Via Umberto I. The Vampa and the sfinci tasting are held on the evening of March 18th; the procession takes place on the afternoon of March 19th.
Admission to the events is free. Comfortable shoes are recommended for walking through the cobblestone alleys of the historic center, along with clothing suitable for the still-cool March evenings.
