Devotion to Saint Joseph in the Nebrodi mountains, featuring processions and the traditional soup
In the heart of the Nebrodi mountains, the small town of Castell'Umberto, in the province of Messina, celebrates the Saint Joseph Feast every March, marking one of the most cherished events in the local religious calendar. Tied to the liturgical solemnity of March 19th, the festival brings together the faithful from the town and surrounding districts at the Maria SS. Assunta Parish, in an event that combines devotion, community spirit, and Sicilian folk traditions.
The festivities are preceded by a preparatory Novena that concludes around the day of the solemnity. The highlight of the event takes place between the eve and the day of the feast, featuring two distinct processions: the image of Baby Jesus, accompanied by catechism children, and the solemn procession of the Saint Joseph statue, carried on shoulders through the streets of the town.
The heart of the festival's culinary tradition is the Saint Joseph soup, a votive dish made of legumes and vegetables which, in Castell'Umberto as in many parts of Sicily, is blessed and distributed to the faithful at the end of the procession. Preparing and sharing this soup is a gesture of charity and thanksgiving to the Saint, guardian of the Holy Family and protector of fathers and workers.
In Sicily, devotion to Saint Joseph is deeply rooted and expressed through votive altars, communal tables, decorated breads, and traditional dishes offered to the community. The Castell'Umberto festival is a vibrant part of this cultural and religious heritage, keeping alive a practice passed down through generations. It is a precious opportunity to discover the identity of a Nebrodi village and its deep connection to the rural and spiritual roots of the Messina province.
Perched on the hills between Cefalรน and Messina, Castell'Umberto originated from the ancient settlement of Castania and took its current name in 1865 in honor of Prince Umberto. Its territory, overlooking the Fitalia valley and offering views towards the Aeolian Islands and Mount Etna, provides the ideal setting for a festival that continues to bring the community together every year around the figure of Saint Joseph.
The 2026 Saint Joseph Feast in Castell'Umberto was celebrated at the Maria SS. Assunta Parish between Saturday, March 21st and Sunday, March 22nd, preceded by the traditional Novena. On Saturday, March 21st, the eve of the feast, the procession of the Baby Jesus image was held with the participation of catechism children. On Sunday, March 22nd, the day of the feast, the solemn Holy Mass was celebrated at 11:00 AM, followed by the blessing of fathers, the procession of the Saint Joseph image through the town center, and the blessing and distribution of the traditional Saint Joseph soup to the faithful.
The festival takes place in March, coinciding with the solemnity of Saint Joseph (March 19th). The main celebrations are concentrated between the eve and the day of the feast, including the solemn Holy Mass, processions, and the distribution of the soup.
