About Saint John the Baptist Lucoli

In Lucoli, a small mountain town in the Province of L'Aquila, the Saint John the Baptist Patronal Feast celebrates the community's patron saint every year in late June. The heart of the event is the ancient Abbey of San Giovanni Battista in Collimento, founded in 1077, featuring liturgical celebrations, convivial gatherings, and the evocative Saint John's Fire, a traditional ritual rooted in centuries of Abruzzo's religious and folk history.

A millennial feast in the heart of the L'Aquila Apennines

The Saint John the Baptist Patronal Feast is the most cherished event of the year for the community of Lucoli, a mountain town nestled in the woods of the Apennines, in the Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo. Saint John the Baptist is the town's patron saint, and his feast, which culminates on his Nativity on June 24th, has represented the spirit of the historical and religious identity of the Lucolani people for centuries.

The Abbey of Collimento, the core of the event

The spiritual center of the feast is the majestic Abbey of San Giovanni Battista, located in the hamlet of Collimento. Its origins date back to 1077, when Count Oderisio of the Marsi, who resided in the castle of Collimento, donated a vast territory to the Benedictine monastery, corresponding roughly to the current municipality of Lucoli. The unification of the Lucoli valley was born from that very donation, which made the abbey the administrative and religious heart of the entire valley.

Inside, the building houses an artistic heritage of great value: Renaissance frescoes attributed to Andrea De Litio, a fine organ from the Farina workshop, a coffered wooden ceiling, a Baroque altar, and an evocative cloister with two tiers of loggias. Over the centuries, the abbey has suffered damage from earthquakes and undergone several restorations, returning today to its Romanesque-Renaissance splendor.

The ritual of the Saint John's Fire

Among the most characteristic traditions of the feast is the Saint John's Fire, an ancient ritual linked to the summer solstice and the magical night of June 23rd. Around the large bonfire, the community gathers for a moment of conviviality that blends the sacred and the popular, according to a custom widespread throughout Abruzzo. In the past, the local boys would jump over the embers as a gesture of good luck and purification.

A program between liturgy and community

The feast spans several days and alternates between religious celebrations and moments of gathering: Holy Masses, first communions, recitations of the Rosary, Eucharistic adoration, and the shared community dinner that brings the whole town together. All this takes place in a setting of great natural beauty, among the woods and mountain pastures surrounding Lucoli and the nearby Campo Felice area.

  • To visit one of the most important Benedictine abbeys in inland Abruzzo
