About Saint John's Festival

Every June 24th, the community of San Giovanni di Fassa-Sèn Jan gathers in Vigo di Fassa for the Saint John's Festival, the feast of the patron saint of the Pieve di Fassa. A traditional procession reaches the ancient Pieve di San Giovanni, followed by Holy Mass and a social gathering on the churchyard with the Musega da Vich. A simple and heartfelt evening that renews the valley's Ladin identity around one of the oldest churches in the Dolomites.

A patronal feast in the Ladin heart of Val di Fassa

The Saint John's Festival (in Ladin Sagra de Sèn Jan) is the feast of the patron saint of San Giovanni di Fassa-Sèn Jan, a municipality in the Autonomous Province of Trento, in Trentino-Alto Adige. Saint John the Baptist is the patron of the Pieve di Fassa, the Parish of Vigo, and the municipality itself: every June 24th, the day of the Nativity of the Baptist, the community gathers in the village of Vigo di Fassa to renew a tradition rooted in the centuries.

The procession to the Pieve

The central moment of the festival is the procession that, in the evening, departs from the headquarters of the Comun General de Fascia and travels along Strada Pré de Gejia to the Pieve di San Giovanni. The procession of the faithful crosses the town, accompanying the image of the saint toward the ancient church in an intimate atmosphere that combines religious devotion with a sense of community. In case of bad weather, the procession is cancelled, but the celebration continues inside the church.

Holy Mass and the social gathering

Once the procession reaches the church, Holy Mass is celebrated in honor of Saint John the Baptist. At the end of the service, the festivities continue on the churchyard with a social gathering open to everyone, enlivened by the notes of the Musega da Vich, the Vigo di Fassa brass band, which accompanies the evening with its repertoire. It is an opportunity for locals and visitors to come together in a simple and festive atmosphere, amidst music, conversation, and tradition.

The Pieve di San Giovanni, the valley's historical heart

The festival revolves around a symbolic site: the Pieve di San Giovanni is one of the oldest Ladin parish churches and was for centuries the religious and civil capital of the ancient General Community of Fassa. The current late-Gothic building, constructed by local craftsmen between 1480 and 1489, is considered the most significant example of Gothic architecture in the Ladin area and preserves valuable frescoes of the Tyrolean school, including one from 1498 depicting scenes from the life of Saint John. Celebrating the festival here means reconnecting the community of today with its deepest roots.

Ladin tradition and valley identity

The Saint John's Festival is not a large, spectacular event, but an authentic community feast, typical of the Ladin culture of Val di Fassa. It represents one of the moments when the town recognizes itself in its history and its patron saint, in a Dolomite valley where religious and popular traditions continue to mark the calendar of the year.
