The patron saint festival in the village of Castelmola, blending faith, tradition, and stunning views over the sea of Taormina
The Saint George Patronal Festival is the most cherished religious and cultural event in Castelmola, a small municipality in the Metropolitan City of Messina perched over 500 meters above sea level, overlooking the famous town of Taormina. Recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, Castelmola provides a unique backdrop for the festival, with its stone alleys, panoramic squares, and glimpses of the Ionian Sea. Each year, the community gathers to honor its patron, Saint George the Martyr, in a tapestry of faith, identity, and tradition that involves the entire town.
The festival is divided into two distinct parts throughout the year. The first, purely liturgical, coincides with the April 23rd anniversary, the day dedicated to the saint. The second is the so-called summer festival, which takes place in July and focuses on the civil and recreational aspects of the celebrations. This dual recurrence testifies to the deep bond between the village and its protector, experienced with great participation by the inhabitants.
The highlight of the April celebrations is the evening procession on April 23rd. Following a solemn mass in the Mother Church, the statue of Saint George is carried in a procession through the picturesque narrow streets of Castelmola, followed by a crowd of devoted followers. The procession is enriched by the presence of traditional candles, carried primarily by the women of the village, and the accompaniment of the marching band, which fills the alleys with music. The statue of the saint, kept in the Church of Saint George, has recently undergone careful restoration to preserve its original beauty.
Alongside the religious events, the festival offers entertainment shows, musical performances, and a small fair along the road leading to the village. The summer festival in July, in particular, is the liveliest moment from a civil perspective, with live music, recreational events, and the typical atmosphere of Sicilian summer celebrations. Admission to all festival events is free.
Visiting Castelmola during the patronal festival means discovering one of the jewels of northeastern Sicily. Dominated by the ruins of the ancient castle and famous for its views of Mount Etna and the Taormina coast, the village preserves an authentic identity that the Saint George festival helps pass down from generation to generation. The festivities are organized by the Parish, the Saint George Religious and Cultural Association, and the Municipality of Castelmola, with the warm participation of the entire community.
The liturgical part of the 2026 edition took place from April 23 to 26, 2026 in Castelmola, in the Province of Messina. The central moment was the evening procession on April 23rd, with the statue of the patron saint carried through the narrow streets of the village after the solemn celebration, amidst candles carried by the faithful and the notes of the marching band. The summer festival, scheduled for July, completes the calendar: the 2026 date for the July portion has not yet been published by the organizers. Admission to all festival events is free.
Castelmola can be reached by car from Taormina by following the SP10 (about 10-15 minutes of scenic climbing). By train or bus, you can reach Taormina-Giardini, from where local buses and taxis depart for the village. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about an hour away.
The liturgical recurrence takes place around April 23rd; the summer festival is held in July (the exact date is announced by the organizers). Admission to all events is free.
The village has narrow, steep alleys: comfortable shoes are recommended. Parking is limited, so it is advisable to arrive by public transport from Taormina. For updated information, contact the Saint George Association or the Municipality.
