About Saint George in Montemerano

Every year, during the week of April 25th, the medieval village of Montemerano—a hamlet of Manciano in the province of Grosseto—celebrates its patron saint, Saint George, with four days of sacred and secular festivities. The heart of the event is the Dragon Joust, a costumed tournament where the village's three districts (contrade)—Borgo, Croce, and Castello—compete amidst historical pageants, processions, live music, and the traditional launch of a hot-air balloon in Piazza del Castello.

The patron saint festival in the heart of Maremma

The Saint George Festival is the most cherished event in Montemerano, a stunning medieval village officially ranked among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. Located in the Municipality of Manciano, in the province of Grosseto, it lies in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma. Every year, around April 25th, the town unites to honor its patron saint with four days of celebrations that blend religious devotion, historical re-enactment, and community spirit.

Saint George and the Dragon Joust

The highlight of the festival is the Dragon Joust, a costumed equestrian tournament that evokes the legend of the warrior saint who defeated the dragon. The three local districts—Borgo, Croce, and Castello—compete with great passion for the Palio, which is blessed at the start of the festivities. The competition, set within the alleys and squares of the historic center, creates a truly evocative medieval atmosphere.

Historical pageant and traditions

The streets of the village transform into an open-air stage with a historical pageant in period costumes, accompanied by flag-wavers, drummers, and the local "Giuseppe Verdi" philharmonic band. The program also features a solemn procession dedicated to the patron saint, a theatrical performance recounting the true story of Saint George, and the iconic launch of a hot-air balloon that lights up the evening in Piazza del Castello.

A true village festival

Beyond the historical re-enactments, the Saint George Festival is a celebration of conviviality: dance evenings in Piazza Canzanelli, live music, bingo, sporting events, and the Tascapane lunch, a moment of gathering for the entire community. It is the perfect opportunity to discover one of the most charming villages in the Maremma, with its ancient walls, the Church of Saint George, and its medieval corners, all in an authentic atmosphere far from mass tourism. The event is organized by the Pro Loco Montemerano with the patronage of the Municipality of Manciano and the support of local associations.
