The patronal feast of Calatabiano in honor of Saint George the Martyr
The Saint George Festival is the primary religious and popular event in Calatabiano, a town of just over five thousand inhabitants nestled on the northeastern slopes of Mount Etna, in the province of Catania, Sicily. Every year on April 23rd, the day the Church celebrates Saint George the Martyr, the entire town gathers around its protector for a day of faith, tradition, and shared celebration.
The cult of Saint George in Calatabiano traces its roots back to the Norman era. It was the Norman conquerors who, after defeating the Arabs, introduced the devotion to the warrior saint, a figure particularly dear to the chivalric culture of the time. Legend has it that Saint George rode alongside Count Roger during battles against the Muslims; for this reason, the saint is venerated as the defender and protector of the community, depicted in classic iconography on horseback in the act of slaying the dragon.
The heart of the festival is the solemn procession of the exquisite wooden statue of Saint George on horseback. The statue is brought out of the Mother Church of Maria Santissima Annunziata and carried on the shoulders of the members of the Sangiorgiari brotherhood, accompanied by the archpriest. The route includes a significant stop in front of the town hall, where the mayor offers the traditional floral tribute to the saint on behalf of all the citizens.
As in other Sicilian towns that venerate Saint George, devotion in Calatabiano has historically been intertwined with intense local pride among the faithful of different parishes, pitting the sangiorgiari against the devotees of other local patrons. It is an identity trait that testifies to how deeply the figure of the saint is rooted in the life of the town.
The evening of the festival, marked by both devotion and entertainment, concludes with convivial moments where music and the famous communal salsicciata (sausage feast) create an atmosphere of joyful sharing. It is an occasion where the sacred and the popular merge, renewing the bond between Calatabiano and its patron every year.
The festival is also an excellent opportunity to discover the village: the evocative Arab-Norman castle perched on the mountain, the Church of the Holy Crucifix with its ogival portals, the Mother Church of the Annunziata itself, and, in the warmer months, the long beach of San Marco. Calatabiano is also famous for its production of loquats and citrus fruits, which are the stars of the town's spring festivals.

Along the route, there was the customary stop in front of the town hall for the floral tribute offered by the mayor on behalf of the community. The day, blending devotion and celebration, ended with convivial moments animated by music and the traditional salsicciata, a symbol of the popular spirit of sharing in Calatabiano.
