Perched on a rocky spur just a few kilometers from the Bussento River, Morigerati is one of the smallest and most picturesque villages in the province of Salerno, Campania. Every year, at the end of August, the town pauses to honor its patron, Saint Demetrius the Martyr: a day where religious devotion and popular celebration coexist seamlessly, moving from solemn rites to festivities in the square.
The cult of the saint tells the very history of the village. The church dedicated to him was built by Greco-Oriental monks who settled in these valleys and was rebuilt in the 14th century; between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it underwent a radical transformation, featuring delicate stucco work resembling lace and an Art Nouveau angel supporting the pulpit. Inside, the sacred icon of Saint Demetrius is preserved, depicted in Morigerati as a warrior clad in armor and holding a spear.
The main liturgical feast of Saint Demetrius falls on October 26th, the day the town celebrates its patron with a second observance. However, the most popular event remains the one on August 26th: the choice of mid-summer stems from the desire to allow those who have moved away to return home and participate in the rites. For many Morigerati families scattered across Italy and abroad, this date has been a homecoming tradition for decades.
The heart of the feast is the Solemn Holy Mass, followed by the procession along the alleys of the historic center: the statue of the saint is carried on shoulders amidst chants, prayers, and moments of intense collective participation, with faithful arriving from neighboring towns as well. As evening falls, the village changes pace, and the more convivial part of the day begins.
In recent years, the festival has been enriched by a religious twinning with Mosorrofa, a hamlet of Reggio Calabria also devoted to Saint Demetrius the Martyr: a delegation of Calabrian faithful took part in the procession and Mass, in a meeting between two communities that venerate the same saint while depicting him differentlyโas a warrior with a spear in Morigerati and as a knight on horseback in Mosorrofa.
2026 is a special year for Morigerati: it marks sixty years since the elevation to sanctuary of the Church of Saint Demetrius, decreed on June 25, 1966. The commemorative program opened in January with a solemn celebration presided over by the bishop emeritus and a chamber music concert in the sanctuary, continued with pilgrimages to sites linked to the saint, and reached its central moment on June 25, 2026. The patronal feast at the end of August is therefore part of a year of particular significance for the community.
Visitors arriving for the feast will find much more to discover. The WWF Bussento Caves Oasis, where the river re-emerges after a long underground journey, the Ethnographic Museum in the historic center, and the baronial palace make for a perfect few hours of exploration. From the sanctuary's panoramic terrace, the view stretches toward Monte Bulgheria, the mountain of Saint Michael, and the nearby hamlet of Sicilรฌ. Morigerati is part of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, and the festival is one of the best opportunities to get to know this hidden corner of Campania.
For the 2026 edition, there are currently no official announcements regarding dates and times. The patronal feast of Morigerati is traditionally held on August 26th, a day chosen to allow those who have emigrated to return to the village, while the liturgical memory of Saint Demetrius the Martyr falls on October 26th.
2026 is nonetheless a significant year for the community: the Church of Saint Demetrius celebrates sixty years since its elevation to a sanctuary, which took place on June 25, 1966. The anniversary celebrations began in January with a solemn liturgy presided over by Bishop Emeritus Monsignor Francesco Pio Tamburrino and a chamber music concert in the sanctuary, and continued in the following months with pilgrimages to sites linked to the saint until the central date of June 25th.
Those wishing to participate in the patronal feast can contact the Municipality of Morigerati or follow the parish announcements: the detailed program is usually released shortly before the event.
Morigerati can be reached by car by traveling up the Bussento valley from the Cilento coast, or via the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway. The most convenient train station is Sapri, on the Naples-Reggio Calabria line, about thirty kilometers away.
The historic center consists of narrow alleys and stairways: it is best to leave your car in the parking areas at the entrance to the village and continue on foot.
Religious celebrations, the procession, and festivities in the square are free and open to the public. Only purchases at the food stalls require payment.
