Saint Christopher Festival

A patronal feast in the heart of the upper Tanagro valley

The Saint Christopher Festival is the most anticipated event of the year in Ricigliano, a small town of just over a thousand inhabitants in the province of Salerno, Campania. Nestled at an altitude of about 560 meters on the edge of the Monti della Maddalena, near the border with Basilicata, the town celebrates its patron saint around July 25th, the day the liturgical calendar commemorates Saint Christopher the Martyr.

The patron saint and local devotion

Saint Christopher is traditionally invoked as the protector of travelers and motorists. In a mountain village in inland Campania, historically shaped by emigration and long journeys home, this patronage takes on a significance that goes far beyond the liturgical date: the festival is a time for the community to reunite, with those living elsewhere returning to reconnect with their families.

Devotion is expressed through religious services leading up to the feast, the solemn mass on the patron's day, and the procession that accompanies the saint's statue through the town center. The community's bond with its saints is profound and extends beyond July: the local devotional calendar includes other deeply felt observances, such as the mid-June procession in honor of Saint Vito.

Between the sacred and the secular

As in most towns in the Campanian hinterland, the patronal feast is not limited to its religious dimension. During the festivities, the town comes alive with the typical traditions of Southern Italian celebrations:

• illuminations that decorate the streets, arches, and squares of the village;
• evening musical performances, keeping the square lively until late at night;
• stalls selling sweets, nougat, toys, and handicrafts;
• food stands where you can sample local cuisine.

In the 2025 edition, the festivities were spread over three days, from July 24th to 26th, following the classic structure of the eve, the patronal day, and the closing day.

The flavors of inland Campania

The upper Tanagro valley is a land of pastures, forests, and small-scale family production: fresh handmade pasta, cured meats, mountain cheeses, vegetables, and preserves make up a simple yet flavorful culinary tradition, quite different from the coastal image of Campania. During the festival, the food stands are the best opportunity to experience this cuisine, which here blends readily with influences from neighboring Basilicata.

Ricigliano and its surroundings

The town is located in one of the most secluded areas of the province of Salerno, where Campania fades into Basilicata. Around the town lies the karst landscape of the Monti della Maddalena, an environment of caves, sinkholes, and beech forests protected as a Natura 2000 site: an ideal setting for those wishing to combine the festival with a few hours of hiking or a tour of the villages in the upper Tanagro valley.

At the time of writing, an official program for the 2026 Saint Christopher Festival in Ricigliano has not been published online. However, as it is a patronal feast tied to a fixed date on the calendar, festivities are expected as usual around July 25th.
