About Saint Bruno Festival

Every July, Segni, a village in the Monti Lepini mountains near Rome, celebrates its patron saint, Saint Bruno, a bishop who died in the city on July 18, 1123, and is buried in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. The festival blends faith and folk tradition: a procession with fireworks illuminating the Sacco Valley, municipal band concerts, a historical costume pageant, and the Palio of the eight districts, featuring traditional games, flag-wavers, and communal dinners in the alleys of the historic center.

The Patronal Festival of Segni

Every year, around July 18, the municipality of Segni — a village perched on the Monti Lepini, in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region — gathers to honor its patron saint, Saint Bruno. The festival is the most anticipated moment of the Segni summer: for several days, the historic center fills with religious celebrations, concerts, costume parades, artisan workshops, and communal tables, in a blend of faith and civic identity that has endured for nearly nine hundred years.

Saint Bruno, Bishop and Patron

Bruno of Segni, a Benedictine monk and theologian, was the city's bishop and died there on July 18, 1123. His remains rest in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the spiritual heart of the festival. It is no coincidence that July 18 is the patron saint's day: the liturgical celebrations, with a solemn mass and a procession through the village streets, traditionally culminate in a fireworks display visible from across the Sacco Valley.

The Historical Pageant and the Palio of the Districts

Alongside the religious dimension, the festival thrives on its medieval soul. The historical pageant, featuring over two hundred participants in costume, starts from the San Pietro acropolis and winds through the alleys to the Cathedral square and Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Here, the Palio of Saint Bruno is held: the eight city districts — Vallicella, Jo Lago, Sacriporto, La Piazza, San Pietro, Santa Lucia, Santo Stefano, and Le Mela — compete in ring-jousting and traditional games, accompanied by flag-wavers, drummers, and musicians. The day often concludes with a large communal dinner in the historic center.

Music, Art, and Flavors

The program is enriched every year by concerts and cultural events: the "Eugenio Blonk-Steiner" municipal band, the La Piazza all'Opera choir, folk music guests — such as Ambrogio Sparagna, the star of the 2025 edition — and performances in the local Segni dialect. The "Ways of Art and Crafts" transform the alleys into a trail of workshops and ancient trades, while guided tastings of Lazio wines, curated by AIS sommeliers, showcase the flavors of the Lepini territory.

A Village to Discover

The festival is also the perfect opportunity to visit Segni: the cyclopean walls and the Porta Saracena, the acropolis with the church of San Pietro, the Roman cistern, and the panoramic views stretching over the valley. Less than an hour from Rome, the village provides free shuttles and information points during the festival days, offering a welcome that combines folk tradition with the authentic hospitality of the Monti Lepini.

Saint Bruno Festival — edition 2026

In 2026, the Saint Bruno Festival centers around July 18, the patron saint's day, included in the official calendar of the Municipality of Segni. The program features religious celebrations in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, a cultural afternoon at the Municipal Library dedicated to Futurism, and an evening concert by the "Eugenio Blonk-Steiner" band and the La Piazza all'Opera choir in Piazza Santa Maria, with wine tasting by AIS Lazio.

The 2026 edition of the Saint Bruno Festival brings Segni to life around July 18, the patron saint's day recognized in the municipal calendar. The religious heart remains the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, where the saintly bishop rests, with liturgical celebrations and the traditional procession on the eve of the feast.

On Saturday, July 18, the afternoon is dedicated to culture: the Municipal Library hosts "Woman-Speed. Female Contributions to Futurist Aesthetics," a meeting between history, music, and dance curated by the associations Il Cinema nella Storia and Naviganti di Letture, with the participation of the Futurist painter Antonio Fiore (Ufagrà). In the evening, Piazza Santa Maria hosts a concert by the "Eugenio Blonk-Steiner" municipal band conducted by Maestro Mario Vari and the La Piazza all'Opera choir conducted by Maestro Paola Vittori, accompanied by a wine tasting guided by the sommeliers of AIS Lazio — Castelli Romani.

All events are free to attend, in the spirit of a festival that unites faith, music, and community.
