The patron saint's feast in the ancient village of Sansicario, featuring mass, blessed bread, and Occitan dances
The Saint Athanasius Patronal Feast is the most cherished event in Sansicario Borgo, a small hamlet in the municipality of Cesana Torinese, located in the Upper Susa Valley within the Metropolitan City of Turin (Piedmont). Not to be confused with the nearby Sansicario ski resort, the ancient village preserves the authentic atmosphere of an Alpine mountain settlement, where the community gathers every May 2nd to honor its patron saint.
The religious heart of the feast is the solemn holy mass at 11:00 AM, celebrated in the charming Chapel of Saint Athanasius, located in the old village. The celebration is attended by women in traditional costumes and local authorities, including the mayor of Cesana Torinese. At the end of the mass, the most characteristic moment takes place on the churchyard: the blessing and distribution of the blessed bread, a symbol of community and devotion that binds residents and visitors together.
After the religious service, the feast turns into a social gathering. Traditional gofri (mountain waffles) are served, along with pizzas and focaccias baked in the village oven. Over the years, the barbecue hosted by the Cesana Torinese Alpini Group has enriched the day, creating a festive atmosphere that brings together residents, vacationers, and curious visitors.
In the early afternoon, starting at 2:00 PM, the celebration continues with Occitan music and dances, an expression of the Provençal and Alpine culture that characterizes the high valleys of western Piedmont. Bagpipes, accordions, and violins accompany the traditional dances, while, weather permitting, there is also a game of bocce. It is an opportunity to discover the Occitan roots of this borderland, suspended between Italy and France.
The feast is organized by the Pro Loco San Sicario 1560, with the patronage of the Municipality of Cesana Torinese, and relies on the commitment of volunteers, the Alpini, and the parish. More than just an event, it is an identity-defining ritual that keeps the memory of the village alive and renews its sense of belonging every year. For those visiting the mountains of the Upper Susa Valley in spring, it is the perfect occasion to experience a day of authentic tradition, far from the major tourist circuits.
