About Focarone of Saint Anthony

Every January 17th, Cesinali lights its Focarone in Piazza Enrico Cocchia, renewing one of the most heartfelt traditions in Irpinia. Around the great bonfire dedicated to Saint Anthony Abbot—known as Sant'Antuono to the local farmers—animals dressed in their festive best parade to receive a blessing, followed by a procession of the Saint and the blessing of the fields. In the evening, the village gathers around the embers to enjoy zeppole, sausages, and traditional local products.

A bonfire that warms the Irpinian winter

On January 17th, the feast day of Saint Anthony Abbot, the village of Cesinali, in the province of Avellino, gathers around its Focarone. This date marks the heart of winter in Irpinia: the hermit saint, affectionately called Sant'Antuono here, is the protector of animals and the countryside. The fire lit in the square serves as a ritual of purification, a plea for protection, and an opportunity for the entire community to come together. This is no staged re-enactment, but a custom passed down through generations that strengthens the village's bonds every year.

The Focarone in Piazza Enrico Cocchia

The meeting point is Piazza Enrico Cocchia, in the historic center of Cesinali, where a large woodpile is prepared in the days leading up to the event. In the early afternoon, the traditional Focarone is lit: flames rise above the village rooftops, and the smoke becomes a visible signal that the festival has begun. The arrival of the « Città di Serino » marching band accompanies the moment with the marches that have always defined Irpinian patronal feasts, turning the square into an open-air stage.

The blessing of the animals

The most anticipated moment is the blessing of the animals, a well-established tradition that draws families, farmers, and curious onlookers alike. Horses, donkeys, sheep, cows, and pets arrive in the square dressed for the occasion with colorful ribbons and harnesses, parading before the priest who offers a wish for health and protection for each one. It is a scene of great anthropological value, preserving the intact relationship between the village and its agricultural and pastoral past: for centuries, the survival of Irpinian families depended on the health of their working animals, and this blessing was the most concrete form of insurance.

The procession and the blessing of the fields

The blessing is followed by the procession of the Saint through the village streets and the blessing of the surrounding countryside, accompanied by the sound of bells and the prayers of the faithful. The procession winds through the narrow alleys of the center and overlooks the cultivated hills of the Sabato Valley, in a gesture that unites religious significance with territorial identity. First-time visitors are struck by the natural way the sacred and the daily life intertwine, without any touristy theatricality.

Irpinian flavors around the embers

As evening falls, the community gathers around the Focarone, now reduced to a massive brazier. This is the time for tasting traditional products: zeppole and fritters, sausages roasted over the coals, cheeses, and other specialties of Irpinian gastronomy, accompanied by local wines from one of the most prestigious wine-growing areas in Campania. The atmosphere is that of an authentic village festival, where there are no tickets or reserved seats, and people literally warm themselves elbow to elbow.

Cesinali, a village of traditions

With just over two thousand inhabitants, the Municipality of Cesinali maintains a surprisingly rich calendar of festivals for its size: the Zeza at Carnival, the Crucifixion on Good Friday, the Rosamarina on Holy Saturday, and the feasts of Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Nicholas of Bari, Saint Roch, and Pope Saint Sylvester, the village's patron saint. The January Focarone effectively opens this annual cycle and is the first event that brings the people of Cesinali back to the square after the Christmas holidays.

Sant'Antuono throughout Irpinia

The Cesinali bonfire is part of a dense network of fires that illuminate inland Campania in January: from the focaroni and vampe of Aiello del Sabato, Sturno, Montemarano, Solofra, Nusco, and Teora, to the rites of Saint Cyrus at the end of the month. Traveling through Irpinia during this period means discovering a region far from mass tourism routes, where fire remains a living communal language and every village guards its own variation of the same ancient rite.

Focarone of Saint Anthony — edition 2026

On Saturday, January 17, 2026, Cesinali renewed the ritual of the Focarone of Saint Anthony Abbot in Piazza Enrico Cocchia. The Irpinian village gathered around the great bonfire for the blessing of animals dressed in their festive best, the procession of the Saint, and the blessing of the fields, closing the day with a tasting of traditional local products around the embers.

The 2026 Focarone

The 2026 edition fell on a Saturday, which encouraged a large turnout of families and visitors from neighboring towns in the Sabato Valley. As per tradition, the historic center of Cesinali gathered in Piazza Enrico Cocchia, where the large Focarone woodpile was set up and lit.

The blessing ritual

The heart of the day remained the blessing of the animals, with a parade of beasts adorned for the occasion and a wish for health and protection offered by the priest, followed by the procession of the Saint and the blessing of the surrounding fields, accompanied by the sound of bells.

The evening around the fire

In the evening, the community gathered around the embers to taste zeppole, sausages, and other specialties of Irpinian cuisine, in an atmosphere of popular celebration that confirmed the Focarone as the first major event of the year for the Municipality of Cesinali, in the province of Avellino.
