The Saint Anthony Abbot Festival is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Valmontone, a town in the Metropolitan City of Rome, Lazio, famous for the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj and now known for its large amusement parks. Every year, around January 17th—the liturgical feast day of the Egyptian hermit saint—the community gathers to honor the protector of animals and farmers with a program that blends religious rites, folklore, and traditional flavors. The festival, promoted by the Municipality of Valmontone together with local parishes and associations, is deeply rooted in the agricultural heritage of the Sacco Valley and the ancient bond between people, animals, and the land.

The blessing of animals and farm machinery

The most anticipated moment is the grand blessing held at Largo Calipari, usually on the Sunday following January 17th. From early morning, the square fills with horses, tractors, and vintage farm equipment brought by local breeders and farmers, alongside family pets. After an open-air Holy Mass, the priest imparts the traditional blessing of bread, animals, and agricultural machinery: a gesture that modernizes the ancient propitiatory rite by which rural communities entrusted their livestock and the new year's harvest to the saint.

The parade with the Valmontone Band

The festival day opens with a parade through the town center, enlivened by the "Prof. Otello Francesconi" Valmontone Band, the town's historic musical ensemble. The procession of riders, decorated tractors, and vintage vehicles crossing the city is a spectacle that draws onlookers and photographers, offering a glimpse of the rural Valmontone of the past.

Gnocco di Tritello: the taste of the festival

No Saint Anthony Festival in Valmontone would be complete without tasting Gnocco di Tritello, a symbol of local peasant cuisine. This hand-made pasta is crafted from water and tritello flour—a byproduct of wheat milling—and cut into short, thick strips. This shape, passed down through generations, has been officially recognized as a Traditional Agri-food Product (PAT), confirming its importance to the city's identity. During the festival, the gnocco is prepared and offered for tasting in a convivial atmosphere that brings generations together.

Religious rites and family activities

In the days leading up to the blessing, the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie hosts a preparatory triduum with the recitation of the Rosary and Holy Masses with sermons. There are also activities for children: in recent editions, educational workshops dedicated to animals and nature have been organized to introduce children to the agricultural world and the meaning of the festival.
