The Saint Alexander Patronal Festival is the most important religious and popular event in Barrafranca, a town of about 13,800 inhabitants nestled at an altitude of 450 meters in the heart of the Enna province, Sicily. It is celebrated every year on May 3rd in honor of Saint Alexander I, Pope and martyr, who was proclaimed the town's patron in 1572 and has been deeply venerated by the locals ever since. The town's co-patron is the Madonna della Stella, celebrated on March 19th.
The heart of the festival is a unique tradition known in the local dialect as "U Viaggiu a Santruscianniru", or the journey of Saint Alexander. The statue of the saint is carried in procession along the so-called Via dei Santi, leaving the town to reach the surrounding countryside in the Sotto Serra and Puntaterra districts. Here, the bearers perform the characteristic "races": the fercolo (processional float) is moved in three stages, repeating an ancient propitiatory rite intended to bless the fields and invoke the saint's protection over the harvest, highlighting a deep bond with the rural soul of the Enna territory.
In the afternoon, before the evening procession, the Barrafranca Marching Band joins the Confraternity of Saint Alexander to walk through the historic center for the traditional collection: the faithful donate bread offerings to the patron saint, a gesture that recalls the sacred and symbolic value of bread in Sicilian rural culture. Visitors are welcome to join the procession and contribute their own offering.
The Saint Alexander Festival is part of a calendar of celebrations that makes Barrafranca a focal point for popular religiosity in the Sicilian hinterland, alongside the famous Holy Week rites with the "U Tronu" procession. For visitors, attending the patronal festival means experiencing an authentic moment of devotion and community, far from mass tourism circuits, where the town's traditions and identity are renewed from generation to generation.
The 2026 Saint Alexander Festival in Barrafranca (Enna province) will follow the customary celebration on May 3rd. The dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published by the Confraternity and the Municipality. The traditional elements of the patronal festival remain confirmed: the bread collection with the Marching Band, the solemn Holy Mass, and the evocative "U Viaggiu a Santruscianniru" procession towards the Sotto Serra and Puntaterra districts. It is advisable to check for updated information on official channels closer to the festival date.
