The fresh pasta of the Matese with mountain beans, for Saint Michael
In San Polo Matese, a mountain village at 750 meters altitude in the province of Campobasso, peasant cuisine is still the star. Among its symbolic dishes are taccozze: a typical fresh pasta from Molise, with its characteristic diamond shape, made simply with water and flour. Dressed with mountain beans, they create a simple yet flavourful first course, an authentic expression of the Matese tradition.
Every year on September 29th, on the occasion of the feast of Saint Michael, the village dedicates the Sagra Taccozze e Fagioli (Taccozze and Beans Festival) to this dish. It is an evening of celebration where taccozze and beans are enjoyed accompanied by folk music, in the company of the community and visitors who come up to the Matese for the occasion.
The sagra combines the religious dimension of the feast of Saint Michael with the convivial and gastronomic aspect, typical of Molise village festivals. It is the perfect opportunity to discover San Polo Matese — a village also famous for its zampogna (bagpipes) and its living nativity scene — and to savour the mountain cuisine of inland Molise at the end of summer.
The Sagra Taccozze e Fagioli returns to San Polo Matese (CB) on September 29, 2026, on the occasion of the feast of Saint Michael. The protagonists will once again be the taccozze, the diamond-shaped fresh pasta typical of the Matese, dressed with mountain beans, served at the village stands and accompanied by folk music. The detailed program for the evening is usually communicated in the weeks preceding the event.
