The patronal festival of Pope Luciani's village
Canale d'Agordo, in the Val del Biois in the province of Belluno, is famous for being the birthplace of Albino Luciani, who became Pope John Paul I. Since the 18th century, the village has celebrated its patron saint, San Giovanni Battista, with a grand community festival culminating on June 24th, the saint's nativity day.
From the early morning hours, the stalls of the traditional market fill the village streets, while Piazza Papa Luciani becomes the centre of the festivities from 6 PM onwards: food stalls, dancing, a carousel, and moments of conviviality accompany residents and visitors. There is also the traditional charity 'tombolata' (bingo game) to support the parish kindergarten, which has been operating since 1868.
Among the most evocative customs is that of "Acqua di San Giovanni" (St. John's Water), linked to the night between June 23rd and 24th: a popular tradition that intertwines propitiatory rites, herbs, and flowers, deeply rooted in Alpine culture.
The festival is organised by the Pro Loco of Canale d'Agordo APS together with the local sports association and with the contribution of the Municipality and tourism associations. An event that, a few kilometres from Falcade, tells the identity of a Dolomite territory rich in history, faith, and traditions.
The 2026 edition of the Sagra di San Giovanni Battista takes place in Canale d'Agordo from June 20th to 24th, with the culmination on June 24th, the patron saint's day. The festival, organised by the Pro Loco of Canale d'Agordo APS, features the traditional market, food stalls, dancing, a carousel, and the traditional charity 'tombolata' in Piazza Papa Luciani.
The detailed program with times will be published by the Pro Loco of Canale d'Agordo on their official channels.
