The festival of transhumance in the Dolomites, between Selva di Cadore and Colle Santa Lucia
The Desmontegada is the popular festival that celebrates transhumance, the ancient practice of the livestock's return from summer pastures at the end of the warm season. It takes place in the Val Fiorentina, between the Municipalities of Selva di Cadore and Colle Santa Lucia, in the province of Belluno, and represents one of the most heartfelt events of the Dolomite autumn.
The most anticipated moment is the parade of the herds: the cows descend from the mountain huts and pastures of the Val Fiorentina, festively decorated with flowers, ribbons, and cowbells, parading through the village streets in a procession that recalls the peasant and mountain identity of this valley. Transhumance is recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
Around the parade, the festival offers performances by folk groups, folk music and dance in the main tent, a market of typical products and crafts, a food stand with traditional dishes, and demonstrations of ancient crafts. It is also possible to visit the mountain huts and discover alpine life up close.
Organized by the Pro Loco Val Fiorentina based in Selva di Cadore, the Desmontegada involves the entire community of the valley. For the visitor, it is an opportunity to understand the deep bond between the Dolomites and its pastoral traditions, in one of the most spectacular landscapes of the Alps.
The Desmontegada della Val Fiorentina will return on the second weekend of September 2026, according to the placement that characterizes it each year. The transhumance festival will take place between Selva di Cadore and Colle Santa Lucia, with the grand parade of herds as the highlight.
For 2026 as well, the Pro Loco Val Fiorentina will offer the two-day program with performances by folk groups, a market of typical products and crafts, a food stand, and demonstrations of ancient crafts.
The precise dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition will be published by Pro Loco Val Fiorentina in the weeks preceding the festival.
The usual structure includes two days with the parade of decorated livestock from the mountain huts of Val Fiorentina, musical and folk dance performances in the tent, a market of typical products and crafts, a food stand with traditional dishes, and visits to the mountain huts.
