The patronal feast of Saints Peter and Paul in the heart of Agordino
The Sagra de San Piero is the patronal feast of Agordo, the main town of Agordino in the province of Belluno, and is celebrated on June 29th in honour of Saints Peter and Paul. The roots of this celebration date back to the Middle Ages: even before the year 1000, the first parish church of the town was dedicated to Saint Peter, around which the first independent Christian community of the valley gathered. By 1409, the celebrations had already taken the form of a fair with tax exemptions for the poor.
Two evocative Dolomite traditions are associated with the feast. On the night between June 28th and 29th, "la barca di San Pietro" (Saint Peter's boat) is prepared: egg whites are poured into a container of water left outdoors, and according to popular belief, the saint's breath shapes a sailing ship during the night, its open sails heralding good fortune. The "riva so mare di San Piero", on the other hand, refers to the short, intense thunderstorms that occur around June 29th.
Today, the festival, organised by Ad Agordo Pro Loco together with the Municipality, unfolds over three days of events under the large tent set up on the Broi, the historic town square. It features dinners with traditional Agordino dishes, live concerts, DJ sets, a briscola (card game) tournament, a solemn Holy Mass, and a market fair that invades the streets of the historic centre. A funfair and cocktail bar accompany all the evenings.
Gastronomy is the star: polenta, tocร da boia (a typical local dish), tripe, canederli (dumplings), tagliata (sliced steak), spit-roasted meat, and the "San Piero dish" showcase the Dolomite cuisine of Agordino. An authentic opportunity to discover the traditions of the mountain regions of Veneto away from mass tourist circuits.
The 2026 edition of the Sagra de San Piero confirms the three-day celebration format in the centre of Agordo, culminating on June 29th with the market fair and the Holy Mass in honour of Saints Peter and Paul. Organised by Ad Agordo Pro Loco and the Municipality, it features food stalls, a funfair, and musical evenings for all ages.
