The patronal feast of Saint Bartholomew in Canal San Bovo, in the heart of the Vanoi Valley
The Sagra de San Bortol is the festival dedicated to Saint Bartholomew, the patron saint of Canal San Bovo, a municipality in the Vanoi Valley in the province of Trento, within the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Every year, towards the end of August, the village gathers for its most cherished celebration, which intertwines religious observance with the conviviality and traditions of mountain life.
Saint Bartholomew, the apostle celebrated on August 24th, is one of the village's protectors alongside Saint Bovo. The stained glass windows behind the parish church's high altar, crafted in Innsbruck, depict both saints, while an ancient wooden icon from 1647 is kept in the choir. The festival takes its name from the local dialect term «San Bortol», which residents have always used to refer to their patron, a sign of their deep and familiar bond with this celebration.
The program alternates between moments of reflection and festive occasions. It begins with an opera concert in the parish church, dedicated to the great names of Italian opera, and continues with evenings under the Festival Marquee, where the food stand offers traditional Trentino dishes accompanied by live music. On Sunday, following the solemn mass in honor of the patron, the village hosts the traditional San Bortol market along the streets, featuring stalls, local products, and handicrafts.
Nestled among the woods of the Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino Natural Park, the Vanoi Valley preserves a heritage of ancient traditions, from the Vanoi Ecomuseum to the ethnographic trail. The Sagra de San Bortol is one of the most authentic moments to discover this territory, far from mass tourism, where the patron saint's feast is still experienced as a true community gathering.
The 2026 Sagra de San Bortol brings Canal San Bovo, in the Vanoi Valley, to life for three days at the end of August.
Canal San Bovo can be reached by car via the SS50 Passo Rolle road; the Vanoi Valley is connected to Primiero and Feltre. The nearest train station is in Feltre (BL).
Events take place at the Festival Marquee and the parish church of Canal San Bovo.
