Three evenings of gnocchi, tradition, and live music in Canale Monterano
In the town of Canale Monterano, a village in the Roman Tuscia overlooking the Sabatini Mountains within the Metropolitan City of Rome (Lazio), summer brings one of the most beloved events on the local calendar: the Sagra de li Gnocchi. For three consecutive July evenings, the charming Piazza del Campo transforms into a large open-air dining room, where the aromas of home cooking, lively conversation, and music welcome both residents and the many visitors who make the trip up to the village.
The signature dish of the festival is, naturally, the traditionally prepared gnocchi, served with savory sauces that tell the story of the rustic cuisine of this corner of Lazio. Alongside them, the table is enriched with many other local specialties: hearty, authentic dishes served with the generosity and care that have always distinguished the Contrada.
The event is organized by the Contrada Castagno, the guardian of the village's traditions, which mobilizes volunteers, cooks, and families every year to set up the festivities. More than just a gastronomic festival, the event is a gathering point for the entire communityโan opportunity to rediscover the authentic flavors and hospitality of Canale Monterano, passed down from one edition to the next.
Every evening, dinner is accompanied by live music, filling Piazza del Campo with melodies and cheer until late. The atmosphere is that of a classic summer village festival: shared tables, toasts, laughter, and the simple joy of being together outdoors during the most beautiful evenings of the year.
The Sagra de li Gnocchi is a perfect excuse to discover Canale Monterano and its surroundings, including the nearby Monterano Regional Nature Reserve, the ancient abandoned village, and the landscapes of the Roman Tuscia. It is an ideal day trip from major hubs like Rome and Bracciano, combining great food with the beauty of an authentic, unspoiled hinterland.
The twentieth edition of the Sagra de li Gnocchi takes place in Canale Monterano on the evenings of Friday, July 17th, Saturday, July 18th, and Sunday, July 19th, 2026, in Piazza del Campo. Organized by the Contrada Castagno, the festival is open for dinner only and features live music every evening, alongside gnocchi prepared according to tradition and many other local culinary specialties.
Stands are open for dinner only on all three evenings.
The festival is held in Piazza del Campo, in the center of Canale Monterano (Metropolitan City of Rome, Lazio).
