About Sagne Festival

Every autumn, traditionally on the last Sunday of October, the small mountain village of Vallinfreda celebrates the Sagne Festival, which marked its 30th edition in 2025. In Piazza del Mercato, local women hand-make the sagne, served with a classic tomato and garlic sauce according to the local recipe, accompanied by sandwiches with local sausage and broccoli rabe. A community celebration organized by the Pro Loco that combines authentic cuisine, hiking in the surrounding mountains, and the genuine atmosphere of one of the highest villages in the province of Rome.

An authentic village festival at the gates of Rome

The Sagne Festival is the most anticipated gastronomic event of the autumn in Vallinfreda, a small mountain village in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, Lazio, overlooking the Aniene Valley between the Lucretili Mountains and the border with Abruzzo. Organized by the Pro Loco of Vallinfreda, the festival is traditionally held on the last Sunday of October in Piazza del Mercato, in the heart of the historic center, and celebrated its 30th edition in 2025.

Sagne: pasta handmade by the women of the village

The absolute stars of the festival are the sagne, a rustic pasta from the Lazio and Apennine peasant tradition, prepared by hand with water and flour by the women of Vallinfreda using techniques passed down through generations. The sagne are dressed with a classic tomato and garlic sauce, following the traditional local recipe: a simple, recognizable dish that tells the story of mountain cuisine made with genuine ingredients and direct flavors.

  • Sagne with tomato and garlic sauce: the festival's signature dish, served steaming hot at the Piazza del Mercato stalls
  • Sandwich with local sausage and broccoli rabe: the rustic alternative for those looking to round out their meal
  • Local wine to accompany the day's festivities

Thirty years of tradition

Born in the mid-nineties, the festival has grown edition after edition to become, alongside the Polenta Festival in January, one of the two major identity-defining events in the Vallinfreda calendar. The 29th edition took place on October 20, 2024, while the 30th, originally scheduled for October 26, 2025, was postponed to November 9 due to bad weather: a sign of the care with which the Pro Loco ensures the success of the day, designed to be experienced outdoors among the village streets.

The day's program

The format is the tried-and-tested village fair: in the morning, an optional hike on the mountains surrounding the village is usually offered (a loop of about 12 kilometers in 2025), perfect for working up an appetite while breathing in the fresh high-altitude air. Starting at noon, the food stalls open in Piazza del Mercato, where guests can enjoy sagne and sausage sandwiches until the afternoon in a convivial atmosphere that brings together residents, families, and hikers arriving from Rome and nearby towns.

Vallinfreda, a mountain village in the province of Rome

The Municipality of Vallinfreda is one of the highest villages in the Roman metropolitan area: a stone village surrounded by woods and pastures, with real winters and cool summers, where the square becomes a stage and the trails climb toward the ridges of the Lucretili Mountains. The festival is the ideal opportunity to discover this authentic corner of the Lazio Region, among the churches of San Nicola di Bari and San Michele Arcangelo, the views over the Aniene Valley, and a mountain gastronomic tradition made of meats, mushrooms, and slow-cooked sauces.

Sagne Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Sagne Festival, the 31st, has not yet been officially announced by the Pro Loco of Vallinfreda. The festival is traditionally held on the last Sunday of October in Piazza del Mercato, featuring handmade sagne prepared by local women with tomato and garlic sauce, sandwiches with local sausage and broccoli rabe, and a morning hike in the surrounding mountains. The indicated date is therefore tentative: it is recommended to check the official announcement on the Pro Loco channels before planning your visit.

The 31st edition of the Sagne Festival in Vallinfreda is expected for autumn 2026, but the Pro Loco has not yet communicated the official date. Based on tradition, the festival should take place on the last Sunday of October in Piazza del Mercato, with the possibility of postponement in case of bad weather, as occurred in 2025.

The format should follow that of previous editions: an optional morning hike on the mountain trails around the village, opening of food stalls at noon with sagne with tomato and garlic sauce handmade by the local women, sandwiches with local sausage and broccoli rabe, and local wine. For confirmation of the date, program, and reservations, it is best to follow the channels of the Pro Loco of Vallinfreda.
