The festival celebrating the traditional pasta of San Giovanni Lipioni, in the heart of Abruzzo
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the municipality of San Giovanni Lipioni, the smallest town in the province of Chieti, nestled in the far south of Abruzzo just a stone's throw from the Molise border, the Sagne Appezzate Festival is much more than a gastronomic event: it is the moment when the entire community reunites. For nearly forty years, every August 11th, the village's historic center transforms into one large open-air dining room dedicated to the local signature pasta, the famous "sagn' app'zzat".
Sagne appezzate are a type of fresh, handmade pasta, rolled out with a rolling pin into slightly thick sheets and then cut into irregular squares about five centimeters wide—hence the name, which means "sagne in pieces" in the local dialect. They are dressed simply and authentically with fresh tomato sauce and basil, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, and, according to tradition, a dusting of ricotta and sometimes a pinch of chili pepper. In some editions, the sagne are accompanied by local sausage, another staple of Abruzzese peasant cuisine.
The festival has its roots in the 1980s and, over the decades, has become the defining identity of San Giovanni Lipioni: by 2019, it was already celebrating its 34th edition. The preparation is a collective ritual. The most experienced women of the village gather in the days leading up to the event to knead and cut the pasta, joined by the younger generation in a passing down of gestures and memories that keeps the local culture alive. On the evening of the event, the square comes alive with an open-air dinner, live music, and folk dancing.
The Sagne Appezzate Festival effectively kicks off the liveliest month of the year for San Giovanni Lipioni. In August, the village calendar is packed with events: book presentations, shows and children's entertainment, musical evenings, and finally the patronal celebrations of Saint Felix and Saint Anthony around August 20th-21st. It is a small town in the Abruzzo hinterland that, in summer, tells its story best through its flavors and festivities.
Visiting the festival is also an opportunity to get to know San Giovanni Lipioni, a village overlooking the Trigno Valley, among the smallest and most authentic in the province of Chieti and the entire Abruzzo region. A town of few souls that, on this August evening, becomes repopulated with visitors, returning emigrants, and curious travelers in search of the genuine flavors of peasant cooking.
The dates for the 2026 edition of the Sagne Appezzate Festival have not yet been announced. The event is traditionally held on August 11th in the historic center of San Giovanni Lipioni, with dinner in the square featuring the typical "sagn' app'zzat". To find out the updated program, it is best to follow the municipality's event calendar and the local Pro Loco channels.

San Giovanni Lipioni can be reached by car from the SS650 Trignina road, taking the exit towards Alto Vastese; the village is about an hour from the Adriatic coast of Vasto. The nearest train station is Vasto-San Salvo, from where you can continue by car towards the hinterland.
As this is a village festival, participation is free, and you only pay for the food. It is advisable to arrive early to find a seat at the tables and enjoy the evening at a leisurely pace.
