The Living Passion of Gessopalena

The Sacred Representation of the Passion of Christ is one of the most intense and beloved Easter traditions in Abruzzo. It takes place in Gessopalena, a small town in the province of Chieti perched between the Majella mountains and the Sangro Valley, transforming the village into a vast open-air theater where faith, history, and community merge. The event is biennial and takes place on Holy Wednesday, involving the entire town in a collective effort that spans months.

A unique setting: the village carved in gypsum

The feature that makes this performance truly unique is its natural stage: the ancient village of Gessopalena, largely abandoned and reduced to a haunting collection of ruins, entirely carved into the gypsum rock from which the town takes its name. Alleys, small squares, medieval churches, and ancient workshops serve as the backdrop for a narrative that unfolds between stone and silence, in what locals call a "small Pompeii." From the highest points of the settlement, the view embraces the mass of the Majella and the valley descending toward the Adriatic.

The performance

The show is divided into three main acts that trace the episodes of the Gospel: from the Annunciation and Jesus' preaching, through the Last Supper, the betrayal, the arrest, and the trials, to the Stations of the Cross, the crucifixion, and the resurrection. The audience follows an itinerant path that starts from Piazza Roma and winds through the alleys of the old village, accompanying the performers scene by scene. Over two hundred local actors and extras in period costumes bring the characters of the Passion to life in an atmosphere of deep popular participation and shared spirituality.

A tradition spanning over half a century

The Sacred Representation was born in 1965 and has become a symbol of identity for the Gessopalena community over the decades, celebrating nearly sixty years of history in 2025. The 38th edition in 2025, titled "Father, why have you forsaken me?", took place on April 16th under the artistic direction of Antonio Persiani, blending tradition with a contemporary reading of the Gospel story.

Organizers

The event is promoted by the Pro Loco of Gessopalena in collaboration with the municipal administration and the Parish of Santa Maria Maggiore and San Valentino, with the involvement of much of the local population. As this is a biennial event, after the 2025 edition, the next appointment is expected in 2027: there are no dates scheduled for 2026, as the representation does not take place every year.
