The Passion of Christ comes to life in the medieval village of Francavilla di Sicilia
The Sacred Representation of the Passion of Christ is one of the most cherished events in Francavilla di Sicilia, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Messina nestled in the Alcantara Valley, at the foot of Mount Etna. Every year, on Palm Sunday, the entire medieval village becomes a natural stage: alleys, squares, staircases, and ancient portals serve as the backdrop for the key moments of the Passion, from Jesus' entry into Jerusalem to the crucifixion.
What makes this performance unique is the collective participation of the community: over 500 performers in period costumes bring the scenes to life, creating a deeply emotional narrative. This is not a simple procession, but a true piece of immersive popular theater, where every corner of the town becomes a living tableau. The audience follows the scenes while moving through the historic center, immersed in an atmosphere that blends devotion and spectacle.
The origins date back to 1790, when Father Silvestro organized a Via Crucis with living characters played by the village children. In 1865, Father Gaetano Calabrese expanded the initiative, involving hundreds of faithful and shaping the "Sacred Representation of Good Friday" that has been passed down through time. Since 2017, the performance has been moved to Palm Sunday, preceding Holy Week. In January 2023, the "A Passioni" Association was founded with the goal of promoting, organizing, and safeguarding this cultural and religious heritage.
The event is now part of the Europassione per l'Italia circuit, a network that brings together Italian associations and groups dedicated to the Rites of Holy Week and Sacred Representations. This recognition places Francavilla di Sicilia among the key centers for this form of sacred popular theater, alongside other Sicilian and national locations.
In recent years, the "A Passioni" Association has complemented the spring performance with summer initiatives, such as "Summer Passion," an experiential journey featuring local street food, Sicilian storytelling, and video projections, as well as the "A Passioni in Music" festival. It is a way to keep the community's passion for its roots alive throughout the year.
